Innova has played a role as a value-added resource ever since we first opened our doors in 1998. Our goal was to offer affordable creative solutions to complement the print and production capabilities of our sister company, Sigler Printing.
Innova is a part of Sigler Companies, which offers end-to-end creative, production and distribution services. We have 3 locations in Iowa and work with clients worldwide.
We bring depth, experience and passion to the office every day. But with the nature of advertising, you don’t always get to enjoy the back story. Now’s your chance to see behind the curtain.
We’re readers and musicians. We’re dog lovers and cat fanciers. We’re motorcyclists and bicyclists. We’re community volunteers and world travelers. We’re the people of Innova. Learn what makes us tick by checking out our stories above.
Innova is a creative team you can call your own. Designers immersed in your brand. Copywriters fluent in your tone. Marketing and PR strategists with your best interests in mind. Plus, account executives and project managers who ensure we all play nicely together.
Economies change. Mediums evolve. Goals remain the same. You still need to promote your business, sell your product and reach your people. But we understand that it’s not about doing more with fewer resources, it’s about doing more with better resources.
If you don’t see it here, ask. We’ll find a way.
But if we can make it cool? That’s where it gets fun for us – and powerful for you. People remember you better. People like you more.
Over the years, we’ve created award-winning, results-yielding advertising, from posters and billboards to websites and newsletters. Our inspiration takes many forms, as you can see from our samples above.
To add your name to our portfolio of great work, please contact us.
This week we enjoyed the opportunity to speak to the members of AMA Iowa on foursquare and the power of location-based marketing.
The after-hours event brought representatives from all areas of the local advertising scene out to Dos Rios in downtown Des Moines. (Margaritas and marketers - the perfect mix!) Innova's Sam Schill and Dayne Corwin spoke on foursquare trends, best practices and even some missteps seen by companies using the location-based application.
With over 6 million users and new brand tie-ins every day - such as the partnership with the NFL which netted over 200,000 check-ins for Super Bowl XLV - foursquare offers a ton of potential to creative marketers. We were fortunate to join some of Central Iowa's best and brightest for the evening. There were a lot of great questions and we made a lot of new connections.

Big thanks to AMA Iowa and Dos Rios for having us! If you'd like to see the presentation, you can view it below.
P.S. We're on foursquare - are you?
It’s a team-oriented atmosphere that puts a unique spin on the traditional advertising agency.
We take pride in producing great work. We also believe strongly in integrity, dedication, professionalism and positive behavior. Our mission: To be the most competitive communication and marketing company in the United States by creating a culture that motivates and cares for our people, and serves our customers with passion.
Check for current job opportunities to the right.
We are located in Iowa and create great work for clients across the nation. Give us a call or email us info@sigler.com for more information.

Innova expert to share Latino perspective on cycling at community planning and advocacy conference.
DES MOINES, Iowa, January 26, 2010 – Nannette Rodríguez, Director of Hispanic Marketing for Innova Ideas & Services, will be a featured presenter at the 2010 Iowa Bicycle Summit at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 30, at Hy-Vee Hall.
Rodríguez will speak on Latinos and their relationship with the bicycle. Her presentation, "A Latino Perspective on Cycling: Beyond Transportation," will offer attendees a real portrait of the Hispanic cyclist in America, an exploration of the cultural reasons that make for cycling's reality within this demographic and how to reach out to this population in our community.
Rodríguez brings a unique perspective to the Iowa Bicycle Summit. Born in Puerto Rico, Rodríguez is no stranger to BMX, road and a little mountain biking, and has experienced firsthand the contrasts between being a cyclist in Latin America versus the United States. An Iowa resident since 1996, Rodríguez is also an active member of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and orchestrated a partnership to launch "Another Way to Roll" – a T-shirt designed to raise funds for the Iowa Bicycling Coalition. The T-shirt is part of the "Greater Than Goods" collection – a fundraising apparel movement and online store created by Sigler Companies.
The 2010 Iowa Bicycle Summit is presented by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, the state's largest bicycling advocacy group. The Coalition works to educate and build partnerships to establish safe and enjoyable bicycle transportation and recreation networks throughout Iowa.
The Summit will offer best practices in bicycle advocacy and community building education, and will feature 20 speakers presenting a variety of topics including: bicycle facility design innovations, safe routes to school successes, bike safety, new marketing ideas for cycling and "Ride Right," a safe practices series closely aligned with RAGBRAI, Iowa's premier bicycling event.

During their transition from affiliation with a large financial group to their own shop, Marrs was concerned their clients would lose trust. They sought a quick, seamless transition and a new brand to express their experience in wealth management for high-end clients. Innova developed the Marrs logo and built their brand through a distinct color palette on stationery and other collateral. A brand standards guide was developed to protect Marrs’ new brand at its onset.
Jolly Holiday Lights is a light display event which raises money for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa. Innova’s partnership with JHL focuses on increasing sponsorships, encouraging visitors to the display and strengthening the connection between the event and the cause. Innova’ branding efforts include the JHL logo design. In addition, each year Innova designs, assembles and helps distribute marketing kits to solicit sponsors, and designs and produces branded apparel and merchandise sold at JHL. During Innova’s involvement, event traffic increased approximately 13% and net income by 37.5%, helping raise JHL to Iowa’s largest single-source fundraising event.
Innova was asked by a Fortune 500 company to develop a custom online ordering and fulfillment solution, and integrate the site with a database of over 30,000 users with unique product offerings. The resulting online fulfillment system enhanced the client’s old system as follows: auto-populated user data to reduce end-user time on the site; filtered products available to each person based on pre-determined criteria; limited the amount of free marketing items users could order based on current business with company; and expanded product listing of the site.

Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer. Cookies are uniquely assigned to you, and can only be read by a Web Server in the domain that issued the cookie to you.
One of the primary purposes of cookies is to provide a convenience feature to save you time. Hence, this simplifies the process of delivering relevant content and eases site navigation by providing and saving your preferences and login information as well as providing personalized functionality.

AMES, Iowa, Feb. 16, 2011 – BlueMailCentral, a Dutch-based Web-to-print network with an international presence in 32 countries, has selected Sigler Companies as its exclusive service provider in the United States. BlueMailCentral lets individuals and companies print and deliver documents worldwide for a flat fee, saving up to 88 percent versus the traditional effort and time involved with printing, assembling and applying postage.
The addition of Sigler Companies as a BlueMailCentral network provider means that the Iowa-based company will now print and mail online requests received from more than 30 countries. BlueMailCentral simplifies the process by printing and delivering the documents as close to the destination as possible.
“For example, we’re receiving Web-to-print requests coming from Venezuela to mail documents to the United States,” said Jeff Oleson, business solutions analyst at Sigler. “Through BlueMailCentral, they can print documents from their personal computers in Venezuela directly to our presses here in Iowa. Sigler then prints and sends their document via the USPS [U.S. Postal Service] to the final U.S. destination. It’s quicker and bypasses international post, saving postage costs, fulfillment and delivery time. The process also reduces the environmental impact of global postal delivery.”
“We selected Sigler Companies because of their range of complementary services, their location, but above all, the relationship we’ve established,” said Colin de Vries, owner and founder of BlueMailCentral. “Even though Sigler’s processes weren’t identical to ours, they worked to adapt and fit their workflow to service BlueMailCentral’s customers – not every print company can do that.”
As a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified printer, Sigler could also ensure that all BlueMailCentral’s Web-to-print requests were printed following the FSC chain to meet the standards set for responsible forest use, management and sustainability. This includes paper with 10 percent recycled content.
“We’ve been quick to recognize that print is not dying; it’s changing,” said Sigler Companies President Beth Cross. “Sigler’s involvement as the U.S. BlueMailCentral provider is a solid partnership that required investing in the latest technology and training to oversee BlueMailCentral’s fulfillment in America.”
Sigler completed the first BlueMailCentral print request on Jan. 24 and is now printing on a daily basis.
About BlueMailCentral
BlueMailCentral is a Dutch company specializing in international hybrid mail. Customers can send their documents in a digital form to BlueMailCentral’s server from any application. Documents are then sent to the designated country for printing and delivery by the local mail service. This can be done using BlueMailCentral’s software or Application Programmable Interface (API). All documents are encrypted before being uploaded to BlueMailCentral’s server. All printing locations have top-of-the-line equipment and have all the necessary safety measures in place to ensure the contents of documents are never disclosed. BlueMailCentral’s network includes printing locations in 32 countries worldwide, with many more currently being negotiated, taking the total to 70.

AMES, Iowa, February 15, 2011 – Sigler Companies has streamlined its production capabilities by merging data-mining technology with variable data printing. This capability allows Sigler to produce and deliver personalized communications exactly when and where customers need them. Sigler’s investment in GMC Software Technology’s PrintNet Enterprise Solution offers its customers a combination of transactional and promotional marketing through printed materials.
PrintNet enables Sigler’s presses to create individualized printed materials containing sequenced and non-sequenced data, Universal Product Codes (UPC), Quick Response (QR) codes and other variable data based on identifiers in a database.
The software investment will allow Sigler’s equipment to process upwards of 1.5 million variable data records in about 10 minutes and can export native output files to allow Sigler to partner with other GMC PrintNet vendors on grand-scale projects.
“This investment represents a quantum leap for our production capabilities,” said Jeff Oleson, Business Solutions Analyst for Sigler Companies. “From a capacity standpoint, PrintNet magnifies our output exponentially through the use of state-of-the-art inhouse variable data technology. Additionally, the capacity to add modules for automation, web-based controls and other utilities are available to help us expand,” added Oleson.
Sigler Companies’ investment in PrintNet also included the training of a six-person team to implement and manage the technology through the company’s production workflow. The software is considered the global standard in personalized communications.
“We selected PrintNet because it allows us to integrate transpromotional and multi-channel customer communications,” said Beth Cross, President of Sigler Companies. “As it stands, companies wanting to design and print a direct mail piece with variable QR codes, a Personalized Universal Resource Locator (PURL) and a unique numerical sequence all in one, may have to work with multiple vendors to get it produced. PrintNet allows us to generate, manage and print large, multi-part variable data runs in a single stream.”

To establish Burgie’s storefronts as preferred destinations and promote their packaged coffees and teas to connoisseurs and the general public alike, Innova developed a new logo and tagline; an updated color palette; and positioning statement. Innova wrote collateral material to tell the Burgie’s story and applied the brand elements to elements such as external and internal signage, bags, labels, aprons, t-shirts and other apparel.
KU came to Innova seeking assistance in developing a brand image for their fraternity and sorority community. Innova developed pieces for the admissions office to use in recruitment via print and multimedia. To meet KU’s request for images usable for up to five years, Innova created a unisex design that allowed the dominant color to be easily changed from year to year. We also designed images and colors to work in motion on any multimedia representation.
Developed exclusively for formal recruitment, Innova’s Campus Director software is the smart way to simplify recruiting. The online solution allows colleges and universities to manage fees, schedule events, send invites, complete bid-matching and more – all from a single secure source. Campus Director offers everything needed to manage recruitment easily and affordably.
We’re gathering up the great campaigns, important events, funny videos, useful tools and random stuff that catches our attention. Here are some of the coolest finds for the week, in no particular order…
1. iPad Ad It's begun. If you caught the Oscars a couple Sundays ago, you likely saw the first TV spot for the latest Apple "i" candy, the iPad. Even though Apple's tablet announcement met with mixed reviews, odds are millions will still be fighting to be one of the first to get their fingerprints all over it.The commercial showed the iPad almost exclusively for what it is - a media delivery device, rather than productivity tool - seamlessly gliding from e-book to web browser to movie viewer. The :30-second spot ends with the April 3 release date. Mark your calendars, empty your piggy banks.Side note: Glad to see the latest twist on iPhone ads - it's a smart move speaking to real-world situations, such as family travel or being put on-hold. It's no longer about exclusivity, it's about everyday utility, repositioning the iPhone from luxury to necessity.
2. Google Fiber to Des Moines Who doesn't want blazing speed broadband? Ever since Google issued an open RFI to implement its experimental fiber network with lightning quick data transfers (up to 1 gig/sec!), cities everywhere have been clamoring to be one of the test communities, some even changing their names to court the good folks at Google. The people behind DSMfiber are leading the charge and pleading the case for Des Moines. Join the cause and keep Des Moines on the cutting edge.
3. New Zappos Ads Check out Zappo's new ad, featuring real customer service calls re-enacted by puppet versions of their employees and customers. But it's more than just a fun twist - it's taking strong advantage of today's employee-centric shift. It's a little advertising, a little PR and even a little recruiting, all with a :30-second spot and some felt.
4. Pepsi Refresh Everything ProjectPepsi is going to donate millions of dollars to good causes, but they want your help in deciding which ones are the most worthy. Building a community center in Des Moines? Providing iPod Touches to help a science class? Turning an empty storefront into an art display for the Octagon Center in Ames? Visit the site and search for your favorite cause or city.
5. Logorama This French import won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. "Logorama" brings more than 2,500 logos to life in a story of big-city adventure (including a gun-toting Ronald McDonald). Check out the opening to the 17-minute film at http://www.logorama-themovie.com. If you dig around the dark, seedy corners of the Internet, you can also find the full version. (Not that we're condoning illegal downloading!)

Have a suggestion? Email us your finds and we’ll try to include them in the next edition.

The honor builds on similar efforts in 2006 and 2007, and brings the total amount of recycled material to more than 2,550 tons over the three-year stretch. Sigler Companies president Beth Cross believes the award is representative of the organization's commitment to the environment.
"We've worked hard to positively impact the environment," Cross said. "We sincerely thank Mid-America Recycling for recognizing our efforts in recycling. The credit for this award also goes to our co-workers who are passionate about initiating and supporting our company's environmental programs."
Sigler Companies’ 2008 efforts are equivalent to the following resource conservation:
Sigler Companies has established itself as a green printer through certification with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Other green printing practices include concentric printing, a revolutionary technology that uses 25 percent to 35 percent less ink than the traditional printing process, and adoption of inks free of volatile organic compounds (known as no-VOC or VOC-free inks). Offices throughout Sigler Companies have also taken energy and water conservation steps to help minimize the impact on the environment.
Employees have led the charge for green initiatives by forming the Sigler Companies Green Committee more than a year ago. The group researches and provides guidance on best practices, in addition to sending out weekly tips electronically to help co-workers easily take eco-friendly steps at work and home. The group will continue to work to make changes throughout the company on a continually broader scale.
"We're proud of the progress we've made with our recycling and green programs," Cross said. "We look forward to meeting the challenge of continually reducing our impact on the environment."

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, not surprisingly, small businesses are starting to embrace social media more and more:
Last year, social-media adoption by businesses with fewer than 100 employees doubled to 24% from 12%, says a survey released in January of 2,000 U.S. entrepreneurs from the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business and Network Solutions LLC, a Web-services provider in Herndon, Va.
Just because its adoption is on the rise, does that mean social media is right for small businesses? I say that depends on where your customers are. Start with some simple searches to get a feel for where conversations are happening.
A good place to start is setting up alerts through Google or Socialmention.com. Take some time to simply track where the conversation is coming from. Evaluate the tone of the conversations. Are there opportunities for you to contribute, by adding a comment on a blog post or responding to a tweet? Do you see a need for more content or insight from your own blog?
Sometimes people see Twitter and Facebook as massive sites that only large retail corporations with resources can benefit from. When you take a closer look, you see that it’s all in how you use these sites.
As a small business, you probably don’t need to speak to the millions of people on Twitter. You are looking for the thousands or just the few hundreds that may be interested in your product or service. Twitter is what you make of it - you only need to follow the people that matter to your business and hopefully they follow you back and then, voila…you’ve just created your own "twittersphere." Now you just need to spend time getting to know these people and understanding how you can add value to the conversation. (I guarantee you it’s not by sending links to your website 8 times a day.)
You can use a similar strategy with Facebook. Find the people that care about your brand and build a Facebook Page for those people. Target them with ads, provide useful, fun content and get them sharing your page through their social actions (i.e., Jenny commented on a picture on your site, it shows up on her profile and lists in her news feed to her friends).
More to the point, find out where your audience is. Perhaps the best place to speak to them is within a niche network on Ning, where like-minded people discuss specific topics. For example, you could find a group of people supporting autism research or people passionate about skydiving.
Maybe your audience would enjoy seeing videos of your product in use and YouTube makes sense. Perhaps your customers would thrive on earning discounts from checking in through Foursquare. It could be that your customers are looking for specific product scenarios that could be demonstrated on your blog. Or maybe they just want to download your most recent consulting presentation from Slideshare.
With many small businesses, one person may be handling all the marketing or maybe an owner is trying to juggle sales, marketing, accounting and HR all at once. This is where time-management and careful use of resources becomes critical. Utilize tools like Hootsuite, Tweetdeck or simply put an egg-timer on your desk and give yourself 45 minutes in the morning and afternoon to work on your social media presence.
Think of it like this… if you treat social media interactions like you are having a face-to-face conversation with one of your customers, you can’t really go wrong. You just need to find out where they are so you can initiate that conversation in the first place.

The "Mac vs. PC" campaign just keeps on going. You can hardly watch prime time TV without coming across one of these ads, the most recent of which features a guest appearance by Patrick Warburton as a top-of-the-line PC. Launched in 2006 and charming to a fault, the spots all come together to discuss the finer points of Macs while poking fun at PC’s. Pretty fun when they first aired, but the time to pull the plug may be upon us.
The original premise was brilliant: attack ads painted with softer brushstrokes. (You can practically hear “Why Can’t We Be Friends” playing in the background.) It doesn’t hurt that Mac is played to perfection by Justin Long – an actor too clean cut to be full-on slacker, too down-to-earth to be a true leading man.
Let’s face it, though – the reason we keep watching is because of PC. Portrayed by Bill Gates body-double John Hodgman, PC is the nerdish counterpart who tries too hard. But you know what? As the campaign has gone on, he’s become the more dynamic character. He’s different each time. He kind of grows on you.
Admit it, one day you want Wile E. Coyote to catch Roadrunner. Even though it’s the same cartoon over and over again, you watch to see what kind of Acme jetpack or catapult he’s going to put together next. Similarly, as Seinfeld seasons began to add up, social misfits Kramer and George Costanza ate up more screen than leading man Jerry Seinfeld.
While creating secondary characters may be great for the longevity of your TV show, it doesn’t always work for commercials – especially when that popular co-star is the embodiment of your direct competitor.
You can’t help but be intrigued by PC. You can relate to PC, maybe even sympathize with PC. That’s the trouble with humanizing products – you start to draw emotions, some of which may spill unintentionally over to your competitor. And when that competitor starts to take over the spotlight in your own ads, it’s time to pull back.
(Of course, Microsoft didn’t necessarily do itself any favors, though, bullying back with its price point campaign calling out Macs. Not necessarily hitting below the belt, but definitely aiming for the wallet.)
Everyone knows how fast, easy and all-out awesome you are, Apple. But it’s time to prove it in a new way. It’s been a few years now. Let Long go back to starring in fun but harmless teen romps and romantic comedies and Hodgman go back to, well, whatever else it is that he does these days.
Put on a fresh pot of coffee, book the conference room and start concepting, TBWA. We look forward to what’s next.

We’re gathering up the great campaigns, important events, funny videos, useful tools and random stuff that catches our attention. Here are some of the coolest finds from the last couple of weeks, in no particular order…
1. UNI Upsets Kansas. Really, this could be any one of this year's NCAA Tournament upsets: Ohio over Georgetown, Murray State over Vandy, St. Mary's to the Sweet 16, even Butler, a 5-seed, making it to the championship game.
But we've got to give the Iowa love to the UNI Panthers. Hawkeyes, Cyclones, even conference rival Bulldogs were pulling for the purple and gold. Mexican restaurant chain Panchero's got into the act, with purple tortillas in the Cedar Falls area. Everyone learned how to spell Ali Farokhmanesh's name. Heck, he was a trending topic on Twitter and even made the Sports Illustrated cover! Bravo, UNI, bravo - thank you for bringing some Iowa pride to one of the most exciting NCAA Tournaments ever.
Side effect of the madness: UNI and K-State shirt sales exploded on our collegiate apparel site, Signify U. (We saw a LOT of UNI buyers coming from Kansas and Missouri. Gotta love those Wildcat and Tiger fans sticking it to their rivals.)
2. Reese's NCAA Tournament Ads. Okay, so maybe it's just because the writer of this post (Corey J. of @heycoreyj) is partial to a good peanut butter cup, but Reese's showed how you can successfully take a brand and apply it to a seemingly unassociated event. The spots built on Reese's current campaign, but showed some basketball smarts. Tweaking the orange background into the hardwood. Matching up peanut butter and chocolate in a bracket-style showdown. It all worked together to sweet perfection. Check out all the commercials at the Reese's website.

3. Iowa State Fair Grandstand Lineup. The Iowa State Fair gave us a sneak peek of the shows coming to the Grandstand this summer, and they didn't disappoint. Kudos to the State Fair for pulling in such big names from all different genres: strong country acts in Keith Urban, Sugarland and Darius Rucker; comedian Jeff Dunham; classic rockers Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon; and the always popular Sheryl Crow and Colbie Caillat. Hear samples and view the complete schedule at the State Fair website.
4. Subway Breakfasts. Everyone's doing breakfast these days, and traditional sandwich hut Subway is no exception. Just trade out roast beef for sausage patties and bacon, add a little egg and voila! Breakfast. Sure, we're biased because there's a Subway just a block away from our Ames location, but good for them for taking a chance and challenging people's expectations.

5. Kotex Ad Spoofs Tampon Spots. Kotex takes umbrage with tampon commercials in their latest campaign. Using an honest, refreshing approach, the spots take on the traditional scenes of feminine product advertising - beaches, blue liquid, even twirling. Finally, a tampon commercial that proves there is truth in advertising. It doesn't need to bring sunrises - it just needs to work.

So you’ve spent all this money developing a kick-ass website, optimized for search engines and oozing with well-distributed keywords. But where is the ROI? Who is looking at it? Better yet, what kind of conversions are you creating?
Your customer’s search habits are evolving. The way they find you is changing. Take a minute to look at all the possible ways a visitor might locate your website.
One of the key things to keep in mind is what your social presence looks like. Do you have well-developed social profiles that engage your customers and prospects and encourage them to dig deeper, conveniently by leading back to your website?
From an updated content standpoint, have you created blog posts or developed white papers that would add value to a customer relationship, draw them further into your site and keep them coming back?
Don’t forget some of the more traditional tactics to drive traffic. A 2009 study from IProspect indicated that nearly 40% of online purchases are still influenced by an offline channel. In the study, participants were asked what prompted them to search online for a particular company, product, service or slogan. The results were:
The key takeaway here is to thoroughly examine ALL channels and develop a truly integrated marketing strategy. Go beyond search engine optimization, but use the same sensibilities - relevant content, frequent updates and that all-important lead back to your URL. Your website and your budget will thank you.

1. Big Omaha. A stellar event brought big names in innovation, entrepreneurship and social media to the Midwest. (And for once, it wasn't Chicago or Minneapolis.) Innova sent a group of our coworkers to the Big Omaha event to rub elbows with Internet superstars like Tony Hsieh (Zappos CEO), Dennis Crowley (founder of foursquare) and Gary Vaynerchuck (Wine Library). Our gang returned inspired, motivated and slightly more proficient in the running man! More on that in a post coming later this week...
2. Square. Speaking of entrepreneurs…thanks to Square, now ANYONE can have a business that accepts credit card payments. All you need is a phone! (Android or iPhone, that is.) It even has a built-in loyalty program that can send the merchant customized notifications based on repeat business. This is something many small businesses could use, as a recent report shows that of the 30 million businesses in the U.S. with under $100k in revenue, only 6 million accept credit cards. Read more on Square…
3. Small to Big Business Forum. The Greater Des Moines Partnership hosted the Small to Big Business Forum on May 11. The forum is a roundtable, round-robin event held every year to help facilitate business-to-business networking. Participants have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Aviva USA, Bankers Trust, Bridgestone, Des Moines University, Des Moines Water Works, Marsh, Pioneer, Prairie Meadows, The Principal Financial Group, Wells Fargo and Polk County. Each participant gets a chance to share information about their company and the products and services they provide.
Our very own Tyler Koontz, Account Executive, attended the event. This is what he had to say: “Some walked away with a better idea of where they stand as a business and what steps they need to take in order to fully take advantage of these types of networking events. I think if someone is truly wanting to network, having an event where people use minglesticks would be a great advantage!”
4. Des Moines Egotist. Last week marked the launch of the Des Moines Egotist, a site that “serves up news on design, advertising and other creative resources to the Iowa advertising community.” The Des Moines Egotist is part of a larger network that started in Denver and now includes San Francisco, Salt Lake City, St. Louis and Des Moines. You may be wondering what Des Moines did to deserve such an awesome new resource. According to the site, it's “[b]ecause we believe Des Moines could be the next Mecca of creativity. It just doesn’t know it yet.” We look forward to the challenge!
5. ARTCRANK. Dubbed as a "poster show for bike people," ARTCRANK rolled into Des Moines 2 weeks ago. Opening night was packed, with bike and art enthusiasts forming a line out the door and around the corner, all waiting to see bike-inspired artwork from a number of local artists (including designers from Innova and Sigler Companies as well as other area agencies). The show ends on May 29, so there's still time to check out all the posters - and even make a purchase which will benefit the Des Moines Bike Collective - at the Instinct Gallery in downtown Des Moines.
IABC of Iowa handed out their annual Bronze Quill awards at a ceremony in downtown Des Moines on May 5. The Bronze Quills recognize the best combination of creative, strategic and well executed work in the communications field. And once again, Innova was fortunate enough to come away with a few of the awards!
Congratulations to everyone who brought home awards that night. We were in good company!
Find a list of all the award winners here.

We’re gathering up campaigns, events, videos, tools and random stuff that catches our attention. Here are some of the coolest finds from the last couple of weeks, in order of typing convenience…
1. Target's "LOST" Ads. Target rewarded LOST fans last Sunday with a 3-part ad series that paid homage to the show. Smoke monster crashing your campsite? Pick up a smoke detector at your local Target. Wreck your keyboard entering the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 & 42 over and over again? They've got a replacement for you. Chasing down a wild boar? Hey, guess who has 99-cent bottles of BBQ sauce. Smart stuff, and LOST fans noticed.
2. Market Day. Looking for a different kind of shopping experience? Check out Des Moines' Market Day. Held once a month, Market Day is a chance for people to browse and buy original creations made by local artists and crafters. According to the Market Day website, the spirit of the event is "arts festival meets bohemian garage sale." From vintage clothing to restored furniture to handmade books, there's something for everyone. Tomorrow marks the first Market Day of the season.
3. Art & Copy Streaming on Netflix. Can't wait for the new season of Mad Men to get your advertising fix? Netflix subscribers can now instantly watch the advertising film Art & Copy. Stream it on your computer, hook your laptop up to your TV or even watch it via the Wii. Heck, add Helvetica to your instant queue for a creative movie marathon. Pop some corn, get inspired.
4. Star Wars Art. Check out these Star Wars-inspired prints from artist James Hance. Who couldn't use a painting of Ewoks playing poker on their wall? Or Cary Grant running from a tie fighter, in a scene straight out of North by Northwest? Or a homeless stormtrooper? Or Princess Leia as the Mona Lisa? File under irrelevant but fun.
5. Stanley Steemer Ads. Yes, the new Nike soccer ad is magnificent. No surprises there. However, what’s got us all fired up lately is the new Stanley Steemer campaign by Young & Laramore in Indianapolis. They reinvented Stanley Steemer without changing their core identity: a big yellow van comes to your house to clean. However, they've reinforced their value proposition with humor and somehow managed to make themselves seem modern, despite using the same old logo and a vintage jingle. You can watch a sample spot below - you can check out the rest at Stanley Steemer's YouTube channel.
The daily grind of an advertising professional can lead to writer's block, designer's elbow, account exec's ennui and countless other maladies. Sometimes we all need a little more inspiration. This is one of the motivational tools hanging up at our offices. Enjoy!

We're a big believer in worthwhile work, and we also understand some of our best hours aren't the billable kind. This month, we enjoyed another opportunity to make just such an impact outside the office.
A group of folks from Innova and other Sigler Companies locations spent a day in late July helping out at the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines.
The Ronald McDonald House offers a friendly place for families to stay while their children are being treated at area hospitals. The goal is to provide a safe haven for much-needed sleep, meals, laundry and relaxation during stressful times. With such a worthy cause, we decided it would be nice to provide a little relief for their staff as well.
Our crew donated several boxes and a couple coolers full of much-needed supplies, from paper towels to canned goods. Then they rolled up their sleeves to help out around the facility. From yard work to house cleaning, it was a day full of doing good where it was needed most.
You can get involved too! Visit the Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines' website for more information on how you can volunteer.
You can find more photos on the Sigler Companies Facebook Page.
Recently, an elite team of Innova-ites hit the road for Big Omaha in our company mini-van. It was a journey westward to hear from some of the biggest names and innovators in social media and modern business culture. Here's what our team took away from the event...

ON INNOVATION...
Sean Conlin, Senior Interactive Media Designer: "First of all, that was the most iPads I have seen in a room – ever. But the part that I dug the most was Jason Fried from 37signals. He talked about how less is more – with design, functionality, proposals, etc. He mentioned that being lazy isn’t such a bad thing – it allows you to focus on the basics. It was also interesting to hear the history of Foursquare. It’s based on game mechanics, and is only about 10% done."
ON BRANDING...
Brian Weber, Senior Copywriter: "My biggest takeaway: Successful brands are maintained over time only when you align business values with branding. Otherwise you’re just faking it and customers will soon realize you’re not who you pretend to be."
James LeMosy, Interactive Media Designer: "The more transparent a company is with employees and customers, the better."
ON CUSTOMER SERVICE...
SC: "It's about scaling one-to-one relationships. Gary V. talked about this and Tony H. from Zappos hit on it too. Zappos prefers that a customer calls their call center when they need something. It builds a stronger relationship and better return customers."
JL: "You have to find ways to have scalable, one-to-one communication with customers, via Twitter, Facebook, email, phone, etc. It’s not what you sell, but how you sell it. The actual product isn’t as important as the customer experience."
SC: "Zappos has an interesting rule for their call center – 'be yourself' and basically use common sense. They don’t have scripts. They want their employees to talk to customers the way they would talk to anyone else."
ON EARNED MEDIA...
SC: "They talked a lot about how to get the 'buzz.' I hate that word and fortunately they didn’t really use it, but it’s what they were talking about. It goes back to the one-to one relationships. Word of mouth = earned media."
ON THE CONFERENCE ITSELF...
Dayne Corwin, Senior Designer: "After hearing the story of his beginnings as a pizza maker, Tony Hsieh illustrated his path to creating the customer service icon Zappos.com. From charity:water founder Scott Harrison’s tear-jerking presentation to foul-mouthed Gary Vaynerchuk’s energetic performance, Big Omaha kept the presentations interesting and lively."
Mollie Batten, Marketing Strategist: "My key takeaway is how motivated and moved all of the speakers have made me. I've never come away from a conference that excited. The last conference I was at was on a single topic, and I walked away from it even more confused and overwhelmed. Everything about Big Omaha was invigorating, from the venue to the speakers, even the amount of time each speaker had. Almost every presenter touched on something that I could relate to. It got me thinking about what things I could bring back to make some positive changes."
DC: "The format of the entire conference was refreshing. You didn’t need to choose one speaker over another, they were all in one room presenting in a consecutive format. The energy and inspiration that flowed in the Kaneko was astounding. It's great to be able to experience something so forward-thinking and innovative."

Innova's very own Nannette Rodriguez was featured in this week's special 5-year anniversary edition of the DM Juice.
The local publication revisited their 5 favorite people from the last 5 years. And our favorite Director of Hispanic Marketing and Senior Marketing & Public Relations Strategist (and triathlete and young professional...the list goes on) was one of them!
The mag is out on newsstands now. You can pick up a free copy, or you can also check out the story on Nannette on the DM Juice website.
Nannette Rodriguez appears on a September 2005 cover of the DM Juice.
With each "Top 5 Finds" blog, we gather up the latest campaigns, events, videos, tools and random stuff that catches our attention. Here are some of the coolest finds from the last couple of weeks, in no particular order…
1. Adidas Star Wars Cantina Scene. World Cup fever brought out David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, Daft Punk, Noel Gallagher and other guest stars for a 2-minute clip sponsored by Adidas that re-imagined a scene from Star Wars with a soccer vibe. It includes one exchange between Beckham and Greedo, who tries to convince the soccer celeb to play for Jabba's team. Beckham looks slightly more pleased to hear this than he did after witnessing a botched save-turned-goal by the USA in the opening round World Cup match against heavily favored England.
2. Stella Artois's "Up There" Video. Beermaker Stella Artois not only commissioned 20'x50' building artwork of scenes capturing the perfect pour, they caught it all on breathtaking video. The mini-documentary "Up There" featured beautiful storytelling on the dying art of hand-painting on skyscrapers. While others are pioneering so-called "breakthroughs" like the scented billboard, there's still room for well-crafted, iconic advertising against a big city skyline. (Special thanks to a fan who shared this with us on the Innova Facebook Page!)
3. Mobile Loaves & Fishes' "I Am Here" Campaign. Sometimes it all comes together, as was the case with this campaign to fight homelessness from non-profit Mobile Loaves & Fishes. Combining mobile marketing (text message donations), social media (Twitter, video sharing), traditional advertising (though literally putting a homeless man on a billboard could hardly be considered traditional) and PR, the effort went literally above and way beyond what a normal PSA could accomplish. Initial goals have been reached, and the wave of awareness is still creating ripples in the form of donations and volunteering.
4. Sprint "Firsts" Ad. The arms race for 4G has started, and Sprint is the first one out of the gate with the EVO phone from HTC. They've marked the occasion with this dramatic :30-second spot of domino effects. Enjoy.
5. Principal Charity Classic. The Champions Tour kicked off June with its annual stop in Iowa. The Principal Charity Classic is a great event for Iowa, and an even better one for Innova, apparently. First, account executive Justin Leonard hit a hole in one. Then, his team finished first in the Thursday Pro-Am. (Of course, the most important thing is actually that the Principal Charity Classic has raised $1.7 million for over the last 3 years for children's charities in Iowa.)
Sigler on Main is our latest venture: a retail storefront on the main floor of Innova's office building in Ames. For the last few weeks, we've been hard at work tearing up carpeting, painting ceilings, rearranging furniture, installing lighting, finding the perfect in-store music mix and folding shirt after shirt after shirt. Now the time has arrived.
Sigler on Main will carry Iowa State, Iowa and UNI apparel for all you Cyclones, Hawkeyes and Panthers out there. Cheer on your favorite team with T-shirts, hoodies, polos, sweaters and hats on a wide variety of clothing brands, including Tailgate, Tommy Hilfiger and - coming soon - Nike.
We've also added cause apparel to the mix. You can find Fight Like a Girl merchandise, which helps raise awareness for breast cancer, and browse the wide variety of cause shirts from our friends at Greater Than Goods. Proceeds from each purchase go to help non-profit organizations, such as animal shelters, disaster relief efforts and more.
If you're in the central Iowa area, we invite you to stop by! We're at 304 Main Street in downtown Ames. Hours are 10-6 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10-8 on Thursday and 10-5 on Saturday. Plus, if you need even more motivation to stop in, a cupcake shop is opening next door in just a couple weeks!
Finally we can take down our "Bless This Mess" sign and share some photos with you below. For more information and pics, you can always visit Sigler on Main on Facebook.
P.S. Don't worry - Innova is still the headquarters for all your creative, marketing and advertising needs. We've just added a little more color to our lobby. Feel free to do a little window shopping before your next meeting! :)

Ever wonder what keeps advertising execs and creatives going strong all afternoon? It's not energy drinks. It's not green tea. It's certainly not fresh air. Yep...it's squeeze cheese and crackers.

Central Iowa Shelter & Services is a Des Moines organization which serves the area's homeless population by providing a nondenominational shelter for our community. Aside from offering beds and showers to those in need, Central Iowa Shelter & Services also serves 3 meals a day at no charge.
Innova's Des Moines office wanted to get involved. Chase Ruzek, Nicole Torstenson, Susie Jones and Susan Hatten (pictured below, from l to r) recently rolled up their sleeves over their own lunch break to dish out a few meals for those who need it most.
We discovered Central Iowa Shelter & Services provides more than 200 lunch meals a day, relying heavily on food donations to make this happen. The organization is constantly looking for new groups of volunteers to serve a meal, and it's safe to say we'll be back!
If you are interested in volunteering or providing food, please email Central Iowa Shelter & Services Executive Director Tony Timm. A little help will go a long way!

Advance warning: This was written by a copywriter (probably obvious by the title). But this copywriter has seen his worlds collide, as countless designer co-workers approach him for help with converting designs into Microsoft-friendly formats. This is his story…(Cue the Law & Order sound.)
Microsoft Word. It’s the program you love to hate, but it’s also one you can’t live without. Despite the growth of OpenOffice and other would-be Word-killers, the Microsoft Office staple is still the standard in word processing applications.
But it’s also useful as a layout program. (Yes, I said it.) Here’s why…
Staffs are smaller. Budgets are tighter. Speed is of the essence. We’re finding a lot more clients are looking for Word templates they can use to send out spot communications, something still branded but easy to implement themselves.
With digital breakthroughs and shrinking budgets, you just don’t see businesses keeping a lot of basestock around anymore. It’s simply faster, easier and cheaper to shoot an email with a PDF attachment than it is to print out on a color copier and physically mail it.
You’re also not going to find very many offices (without in-house designers) with people who are proficient in layout programs and willing to invest in Adobe Creative Suite. What they do know how to use, however, is Microsoft Word.
With just a little training, you can have clients efficiently using Word templates in no time, without sacrificing the brand standards you worked to put in place. You can protect placeholder graphics in the header and footer. You can set up styles to create consistency with headlines, subheads, pull quotes and body copy. You can adjust everything from margins to leading to character spacing. Ultimately, you can make your clients happier by making your layout design portable.
Sure, you wouldn’t want to use Microsoft Word for a catalog or annual report. But for repeat communication vehicles – such as letterhead, memos or even brief newsletters – Word will do.
Sometimes you have to hand over the keys. Microsoft Word templates are a way to satisfy your client’s needs and still keep your integrity intact.
Designers, you can actually benefit from spending a little quality time with Microsoft Word. It may feel dirty at first, but it will be worth it. You’ll be more marketable within the industry and more useful to your clients.
Feel free to share your (relatively clean) comments or experiences with Word. Copywriters love to read.
With each "Top 5 Finds" blog, we gather up the latest campaigns, events, videos, tools and random stuff that catches our attention. Here is a special Fourth of July edition inspired (mostly) by events surrounding last week's holiday festivities…
1. 80/35 Music Festival. The third year for the Des Moines music festival once again proved that Iowa can rock with the best of 'em. This year's 80/35 festival featured indie rock headliners Spoon and Modest Mouse, as well as supporting acts and side stages filled with up-and-comers from all music genres. Even a little rain - ok, a LOT of rain at some moments - didn't dampen the spirits on Sunday. The event was also a cross-promotional paradise. Kum & Go got people in stores with ticket giveaways, integrating Twitter and Foursquare. Pearl Vodka gave away VIP tickets through photo tagging on Facebook. Olde Main pushed people toward their product, giving away tickets in a mystery 6-pack. Oh, and did we mention the giant bird walking around the festival grounds for Avoid the Stork? (No, he wasn't just there to see Yo La Tengo.)
2. Dodge Challenger "Freedom" Commercial. George Washington taking on the British in a super-charged Dodge Challenger? Yessss! Dodge takes liberties with American history in a patriotic number launched just in time for Independence Day. Check out the 60-second version of the spot below.
3. Dr Pepper Made with Real Sugar. The soft drink brand that proudly touts its 23 flavors has added real sugar to the mix in honor of its 125th anniversary. The "Dublin Dr Pepper" has been available in limited areas for a while now, but last weekend the soft drink began rolling out its real sugar recipe nationwide. Added bonus: Ever since we started a grass-roots movement for adding Dr Pepper to our breakroom on Innova's Facebook page, the machine has been the hotspot of the office. Soon we'll be able to say our ideas are made with real sugar.
4. Foursquare Turns 1 Million. The last week of June was a historic one for the location-based social game, as it reached 1 million check-ins for the first time. Then there was the news of a $20 million investment. Plus, they just went over 2 million users. That made for a HUGE month in the Foursquare world. It's all evidence that Foursquare isn't going away any time soon. (AND they haven't even been on Oprah yet.)
5. Ford Fiesta TV Ads. Ford is promoting the American return of the Fiesta with a lively new television campaign. The spots are beautifully choreographed, allowing the city to do the selling. Who needs titles, when you can have umbrella-spinning unicyclists, skydivers and passersby do it for you? Check out the first of the new spots below.
Check out the latest design from our Sigler Companies calendar! Now you can enjoy a parade of design-minded robots all month long from the comfort of your computer or cellphone. (It's hard to get real robots to act so civil. Believe us, we tried. Usually it ends up in world domination.)

Sigler Companies President Beth Cross was recently featured in the Jan. 5, 2011 edition of the Ames Tribune...
"As one of Ames’ largest private employers, Sigler Companies occupies a huge building at 3100 S. Riverside Drive, alongside Ames Municipal Airport.
Inside, hundreds of employees operate printing presses, assemble packages of marketing and promotional products, and silk screen thousands of T-shirts and other pieces of clothing.
But when company president Beth Cross, 53, is on the floor or walking the office hallways, she and the workers greet each other by their first names."

AMES, Iowa, December 8, 2008 – Sigler Companies has won a 2008 Premier Print Award in the category of Environmentally Sound Materials from the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation of Sewickley, Pa.
Billed by the PIA/GATF as the graphic arts industry's largest and most prestigious worldwide printing competition, the Premier Print Awards recognizes those responsible for the creation and production of outstanding print communications. Sigler Companies won a 2008 Certificate of Merit for its Ninth Annual Calendar, "Fifty Years of Redefining Excellence."
Competing against more than 4,200 entries from printing and graphic arts firms around the world, the judges selected Sigler's 50th-anniversary calendar for the award that honors technical excellence in the Environmentally Sound Materials category. Only 21 percent of total entries in this year's competition won an award.
The Sigler Companies Calendar for 2008-2009 is a free-standing desktop tent printed on Forest Stewardship Council Mixed Sources paper. Papers made with FSC-certified mixed sources contain FSC-certified virgin fiber along with FSC-controlled fiber and/or post-consumer content.
Products such as Sigler's award-winning calendar bearing the "FSC Mixed Sources" label support the development of responsible forest management worldwide. The wood comes from FSC-certified well-managed forests, company controlled sources and/or recycled material. Company controlled sources are controlled, in accordance with FSC standards, to exclude illegally harvested timber, forests where high conservation values are threatened, genetically modified organisms and violation of people's civil and traditional rights.
Sigler Companies holds certification as a "green" printer from the FSC as well as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Sigler has been accorded MasterPrinter status by the International Digital Enterprise Alliance (IDEAlliance®), and employs the concentric printing process, a revolutionary technology that uses 25 percent to 35 percent less ink than traditional printing.
For the first time in nine years, Sigler's creative team designed its annual calendar with months back-to-back to save paper on the collateral piece that is mailed to existing and prospective clients.
"While we pride ourselves on the attention and care we give every project at Sigler, it is especially gratifying to be recognized by the Premier Print Awards for the technical excellence of our 50th anniversary calendar," said Sigler Companies President Beth Cross. "Being singled out in the category of Environmentally Sound Materials is further validation of our companywide commitment to printing green."
Michael Makin, president and CEO of PIA/GATF, said: "Each year, the field of entries brings impressive work from some of the best printers in the world. Only a small number of companies receive any award. The craftsmanship and hard work of Sigler Companies enabled them to produce an award-winning piece in the face of some very stiff competition."
Sigler representatives received the award at the 2008 Premier Print Awards Gala on Oct. 26 in Chicago during Graph Expo® 2008. Graph Expo is an annual trade show for graphic design, digital prepress, printing, publishing and converting technology.

AMES, Iowa, Aug. 24, 2010 – While the location-based check-in service foursquare grows in popularity nationwide, the developers zeroed in on the Midwest for creating their online store.
The New York-based foursquare team selected Central Iowa’s Sigler Companies as its preferred partner for the new foursquare Store, available at http://store.foursquare.com. foursquare itself is a trending social network which rewards people for checking into venues via mobile devices.
The store comes in response to user requests for items branded with foursquare’s characteristic fun, quirky designs, further enhancing the application’s ability to blur the borders between the virtual realm and the real world. Products are inspired by badges users “unlock” by checking in to establishments they visit, such as “Gym Rat” and “Jetsetter.”
Sigler Companies built the e-commerce website, screenprints products and handles order fulfillment. Available items include foursquare-themed T-shirts, buttons and stickers. The company intends to rotate a mix of limited edition designs on a regular basis, relying on visitor votes to help determine the next featured item.
The foursquare Store launched Aug. 8, and was a feature story in several online news sources such as Forbes and TechCrunch.
According to Sigler Companies President Beth Cross: “We offer a diverse, value-added set of services that enables us to help foursquare on several fronts – from printing the T-shirts and stickers to interactive design and development to shipping orders worldwide.
“We’re proud to represent the Midwest with this exciting partnership with foursquare. Iowa continues to be a hotspot for business development and growth, and this is proof that our state can both collaborate and compete with major players on the coasts and in major metropolitan areas.”
foursquare is currently one of the fastest growing social media services, with nearly 3 million users to date and adding 15,000-20,000 new users a day.

We all know advertising can be a bit of a burnout industry. You're trying to come up with brilliant, mind-blowing ideas for clients every day. Sometimes the hours are long. Sometimes the hours are hard. You may even turn your family into a focus group - "Junior, what do you think of when I say ?" So how do we stay loose? How do we stay fresh creatively, without turning to a Mad Men-style liquor cart?
It's different for everyone, but here at Innova, we
Our designers pop some corn and watchHelvetica over our lunch hour. Copywriters are starting a book club. It's why we make videos for the Mountain Dew contest.
We also dabble in creative exercises outside the office. We have Art Crank designers and Juice Fiction Contest winners. We have poets in business development.
On this day 4 years ago, we lost a man very close to all of us here at Innova: founder, creative director, vice president and teammate Steve Cohen.
Without Steve, we wouldn't even be here today. Innova Ideas & Services was originally, well, his idea. It was one of his greatest acts of persuasion - convincing the owner of a printing company to open a fledgling ad agency 12 years ago - but it worked. And he continued to bring this incredible ability into every client meeting and brainstorm session for many years to follow.
Steve was a man whose mind never stopped, although you could always tell where he had stopped. Coffee cups, keys, BlackBerry, all would all be left around the building at random locations (often the bathroom). You couldn't blame him, though. Who has time for keeping track of these "things" when the next big idea could be right around the corner?!
Steve was insatiable for knowledge and an indomitable creative spirit. He learned Japanese for one of our first international clients. He'd break into "Jesus Christ Superstar" on business trips (which is even funnier knowing he grew up in Jewish household). He was a non-stop hobbyist who took frequent flights of fancy and you were thankful when he invited you to follow along.
Although Steve was Innova's founder, he was actually much more than that. He was a dear friend, larger than life personality, an industry advocate, our daily inspiration and a father figure to many of us who were just getting started.
He'd challenge you. He'd cajole you. He'd get the best work out of you, by whatever means possible. And when he approved of something you did, it meant more than any award you could earn in this industry.
We carry his torch with us today, helping causes that were close to his heart. An insatiable reader, we named our resource library after him. Passionate for helping people, we stage a food drive every year at this time in his honor. Always "on" creatively, we continue to seek out the kind of fresh, original ideas that would make Steve proud.
Sadly, the only thing that could stop him is also the same thing that took him from all of us. On Nov. 16, 2006, Steve Cohen passed away suddenly in his country home.
We would say you're probably still breaking barriers or breaking into song, wherever you are Steve - but we know you're still here at Innova, as well as with your family, friends and probably everyone you ever encountered.
Thanks for all that you gave us.
DES MOINES, Iowa, November 23, 2010 – Jolly Holiday Lights opens today, kicking off the attraction’s 15th year in Des Moines. For the past seven, this benefit for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Iowa has relied on Sigler Companies and its business units to brand and promote it, helping Jolly Holiday Lights become a family charitable tradition in the community.
Over the years, Sigler Companies has donated graphic and interactive design, public and media relations services, and printed products to make the event possible. Enhanced branding, marketing and publicity for the event have helped raise funds to help the state’s chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfill its mission. More than 2,300 wishes have been granted for Iowa children with life-threatening medical conditions since the Foundation’s inception in 1987.
According to Sigler Companies President Beth Cross, “Our partnership with Jolly Holiday Lights allows Sigler Companies to place its capabilities at the service of Iowa’s children while showcasing the best of what our companies can offer. Our involvement with Jolly Holiday Lights is a chance for Sigler Companies to live its values and create worthwhile work that impacts our community in a positive way.”
Sigler Companies and its business units each year design the Jolly Holiday Lights event posters, brochures, direct mail pieces, advertisements, freestanding inserts, event tickets, apparel and the large-scale banners used at Water Works Park. A Facebook and Twitter presence is also set up for the event. Sigler Companies also provides media relations assistance, sources promotional items, develops the event’s media kit, and helps secure in-kind donations to ensure the event’s success and longevity. In all, Sigler Companies donates an average of 285-325 hours in assistance and support of Jolly Holiday Lights in Des Moines.
The 15th Annual Jolly Holiday Lights will be a celebration of wishes granted over the years. Visitors to the event at Water Works Park in Des Moines can enjoy more than 100 lighted holiday displays along a 3.5 mile route, all from the comfort of their vehicles. Jolly Holiday Lights attracts an average of 120,000 visitors annually. On average, it takes 900 vehicles driving through the display track to raise enough funds to grant one wish. Each year the event strives to raise $300,000, enough to grant about 35 wishes statewide.

In the interest of being green and keeping glass out of landfills, we've whipped up a virtual swear jar on our conference room whiteboard. Each time you let a swear word slip, you have to draw a coin with your initials on it and add it to the pile.

'Tis the season to give back to our community! Throughout the year, we've been cleaning up highways, donating items and sponsoring local causes. What have we been up to for the holidays? Well, where to start, where to start...
The last 2 Mondays we've been volunteering at Central Iowa Shelter & Services, serving lunch to homeless in Des Moines. They're always looking for new volunteers, so contact them if you or your organization would like to get involved. The reward is easily worth the hair net look!

We were proud to participate in the Children & Families of Iowa Adopt-a-Family program in our Des Moines office. We collected presents for a 31-year-old woman with 2 little girls, to help them enjoy a brighter holiday season during difficult times. All in all, CFI helped 258 families this year.

Once again, we set up Salvation Army Angel Trees at each of our locations. Each tree had tags with gift ideas for kids whose families may be facing challenges making ends meet during the holidays. Presents are collected by the Salvation Army and delivered to recipients just in time for Christmas.

We won a few ADDYs. In fact, we're responsible for this year's creative as well. Our people were plenty busy outside the office as well: Designers were selected for Des Moines' first-ever Artcrank show Copywriters won fiction contests Event planner earned a ribbon in the Iowa State Fair Ronald McDonald House Jolly Holiday Lights
2010 was pretty great. Can't wait to see what 2011 brings!
Last week in a phone call with a potential client, we were referred to as "deceptively big." While we won't be changing our tagline any time soon, those 2 little words addressed our business pretty much dead on. We really are deceptively big.
What does that mean? Well...
After a brief discussion, it was refreshing to hear someone recognize truly just how much we can do. Right here in little ol' Iowa.
Call us under the radar. Call us the little ad agency that could. Call us deceptively big. Whatever it is, it's right where we like it.
Bring a little bit of January to your background with the latest wallpaper inspired by this year's Sigler Companies calendar. As you can see from the snowman's telling top hat, January's theme is "pick-and-pack."
Pick-and-pack deals with inventory, fulfillment and matching merchandise to the individual order — kind of like what our friend the snowman is facing here. Am I the kind of guy who can pull off the party shades? Are boots too formal for this occasion? Will people judge me if I smoke my cigar? Decisions, decisions, decisions...

...wouldn't you rather know who your customers are rooting for?
...wouldn't you rather be able to address your customers by name?
...wouldn't you rather hear what your customers have to say?
...wouldn't you rather reach people near the store, at the store or while they are checking out?
...wouldn't you rather know exactly how effective your ad was in real-time?
...wouldn't you rather be able to target your customer's friends as well?
...wouldn't you rather go to sleep at night knowing you didn't just drop $3 million on a :30-second question mark?
Just something to think about, now that the Super Bowl is set. On Feb. 6, all eyes will be on the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers...and those precious, precious commercials. But today's best ads don't need to be bigger, splashier or filled with talking babies or monkeys. Ads can be smaller, scalable and filled with personalization and unique offers.
Super Bowl ads are far from dead, but idea that a Super Bowl ad is the end-all, be-all is. The game has changed. The most effective ads are just a part of a more interactive (read as "two-way") campaign.
Don't be a cheerleader, shouting into the void. Be a fan in the stands, talking among the people.
This summer I’ll be attending my first gay wedding. Two of my friends have decided that regardless of whether our Iowa Supreme Court amendment is challenged, they’re going to begin planning their special day. For now my friends want to keep things fairly secret, but I’m one of the first people they’ve told, so I felt humbled and thought it would be nice to buy a greeting card congratulating them on their engagement.
My trip to Target to purchase this card coincided with purchasing a gift for another couple (yes, I am a complete social butterfly!). I made my way to the customer service area and entered the name of the bride and groom into the wedding registry kiosk. While I waited, some great illustrations of brides and grooms floated around the screen. A few seconds later, the printout of the registry appeared and I was on my way. I marveled at how swift the process was.
However, picking out a card for the newly engaged same-sex couple proved to be a challenge. All of the engagement cards showed a bride and groom...or a heterosexual couple’s hands...or some sort of traditional bride/groom wedding imagery.
I decided to look under the “Congratulations” section, but was disappointed here as well. All the cards were about landing a job or about being a “winner.” Great sentiments, but not at all fitting. I settled for a nondescript engagement card that, although not nearly as personal, was at least accurate in its message.
The cards and the electronic kiosk got me thinking about the opportunity many retailers are missing. Hallmark diversified its card line in 2008 with same-sex engagement and wedding cards. Macy’s has featured full-page, gay-oriented wedding registry ads in major daily newspapers like the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times.
These retailers simply took advantage of their geographic footprint and existing products and systems and modified them to become more inclusive.
Will they face critics? Yes. Will protests and boycotts happen? Perhaps. But these companies didn't choose to diversify their products because they’re making a political statement. They did it because it makes sound business sense.

We recently read a blog post on the top creative logos of 2009 and started thinking about some of our favorite logos and what makes them great. Here are some general guidelines for making a memorable logo (that is the goal after all!)...
It’s simple.
The best logos are generally simple. Can the logo be reproduced in one color or in a medium like embroidery and look the same as it would on a four-color brochure? A logo that reproduces consistently across all media helps with brand recognition. Try the rule of the fax machine: if it can be faxed and doesn’t come out the other side unrecognizable, you’re on your way to a successful logo. For this reason, NEVER use a photo in a logo. (We’re looking at you, OfficeMax.)
It’s got character.
A good logo should be smart, subtle, innovative and/or memorable. The goal is to set your business apart from the competition. Some things to consider:
It fits your business.
Is your business trendy, contemporary or classic? What industry are you in? A good logo should give the customer a glimpse into your business. You can achieve this through colors, typography and/or an icon.
And of course, good typography.
What’s a smart logo if the typography in the logotype is poorly kerned or the typeface doesn’t match? Or worse yet, the typeface is completely illegible. For a good logo, this is a must. Spend time considering a typeface to make it relate to the business and to any icon that may be a part of the logo. Kern letters so there are no odd white spaces. These things will make it readable, personal and put the final polish on a logo.

February is the shortest month, so it's no coincidence the theme for this month's wallpapers is only 3 letters long: "bug." Not as in insect, listening device or to pester. (Sheesh! Three little letters, so many meanings...)
In our world, "bug" means a small logo or symbol applied to a marketing piece. This could be a piece of clothing, a layout or commercial. But here we are, doing all the talking. Let the wallpapers show you what we mean!

DES MOINES, Iowa, Feb. 22, 2011 – Innova Ideas & Services won four ADDY® Awards on Saturday at the annual ceremony recognizing and rewarding creative excellence in advertising.
Innova also served as the agency of record for the second year in a row: creating and producing all of the promotional materials for the event and the call for entries that preceded it. This year’s ADDY theme from Innova was “The Dog & Pony Show.”
The American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Des Moines hosts the annual competition to honor the best creative marketing and advertising work Central Iowa has to offer. The ADDY Awards typically receive more than 300 entries, and serve as a gateway to regional and national AAF competitions. Categories include direct marketing, interactive media, self-promotion and more. For more information, visit: www.aafdsm.com.
Innova received four Gold ADDY Awards for the following client work:
“We are so proud to be associated with the American Advertising Federation on all fronts – as members as well as the agency of record for the past two years of the local ADDYs,” said Beth Cross, president of Sigler Companies. “To also be recognized by our peers with ADDY awards is icing on the cake and a great honor for all of us at Innova.”

Welcome to our special blog series on the South by Southwest Interactive conference. We put an iPad in the hands of one of our copywriters traveling to the event in the hopes that he will use it for good, and not just a place to set his drink. Let's see what happens together...
Here we are, the weekend before the main event and this SXSW rookie is getting the big game jitters. I'm being sent to Austin - along with @DTKoontz, @SamSchill and @Mr_TT, aka "Three Guys from Iowa" - to learn the latest from leaders in interactive and rub elbows with the world's coolest nerds.
Still on my to-do list:
Using this handy SXSW first-timers tip list as my guide, I feel like I'm ready to hit the ground running (or stair stepping, as it sounds like Austin is known for some funky footpaths). Still a little leery of flying down to Texas - especially considering last time I flew my plane went off the runway - but when the boss says, "Hey, you're going to SXSW!", you're going to SXSW.
I've put together a tentative itinerary - trying to piece together the most useful sessions for our clients and to my personal benefit. Early highlights on the scheduling wish list include a mobile marketing ag session feat. Iowa's own Meredith Corporation team and @nathantwright, a writer's creativity exercise feat. Bob Coudal and a talk from the mastermind behind The Oatmeal. Plenty of contingency panels penciled in, just in case rooms fill up early.
Watch for more live blogging coming from the conference when the real deal begins. SXSW, here we come.
~Corey Johnson (@heycoreyj)
Welcome to our special blog series on the South by Southwest Interactive conference. We put an iPad in the hands of one of our copywriters traveling to the event in the hopes that he will use it for good, and not for a new form of disc golf. Let's see what happens together...
Our first night in Austin gave us a chance to explore the city before sessions started. In just that first night out on 6th Street playing shuffleboard, you could tell SXSW brings together a great gathering of people from all walks of life (not including the bat that found it's way into the bar) - but it also serves as a true example of a customer base in general. They're all here for different reasons, from different backgrounds, with different expectations, but they flocked to the brand for its core offering. In this case, information, collaboration and connection.
Highlights from Friday's panels:
Day 1 (Friday) was also filled with walking. Lots of walking. Some of which was due to my poor map management. But hey, it did lead me to the state capitol building. And sometimes a few happy accidents lead to something great - as I hope that's what I'll hear in tomorrow's "Mistakes I Made Building Netflix for iPhone" session.
It's also interesting to see all these folks who are usually found behind screen names are connecting on another layer - in person. With a joke. With a toast. With a waiting line. It's proof that the social media and interactive realm are still very much based on the original concepts of those words. Act online as you would in real life and everything will be fine.
Random other stuff: Saved a pedi cab from falling into traffic. Prevented another one from taking out someone's taillight. Had a shrimp corn dog. Took too long to finish this blog post.
~Corey Johnson (@heycoreyj)
Welcome to our special blog series on the South by Southwest Interactive conference. iPad + copywriter = strange magic? Find out below...
The second day at SXSW started early. Soooo early. But everything's in full swing now, and there's something amazing happening every hour. You just have to hope it's in the room you're at.
Fun stuff from Saturday's sessions:
We capped off the night at the foursquare party (complete with PeeWee Herman sighting!), thanks to some special invites from our friends. Just one of the perks of working on the foursquare store. Lot of fun had by some of the smartest people in tech today, and this tweet sums it all up pretty nicely:

Got to see a couple of my creative heroes. Proud to say this was the day I earned badge.

"The new calendars are here! The new calendars are here!" That's the sound you're hearing right now, as the deliveries of our new Sigler Companies calendars are being met with Steve Martin-like excitement.
We're making the next 12 months a time to "Live Big." For inspiration, we gathered the goals, dreams and ambitions of our co-workers, then turned each one into an original artwork by our designers. And I think we can say without exaggeration it's our best calendar yet.
But it's about to get even better. We want you to be an interactive part of our calendar.
We want to hear how you would like to "live big." Skiing the toughest slopes...catching the biggest fish...growing the best mustache...what would you do? It could be anything from the wild to the wacky. Your reward? A re-interpretation by our very own creative team — original illustration, short story, photograph, haiku, macaroni art or whatever — featured right here on this very blog.
Obviously, all that legal stuff applies — if you provide any concepts, you agree to let us use it on our site, no tagbacks, yada yada yada. So just keep that in mind.
We would love to see what ideas you have for living big! Share 'em and we may choose yours to feature on our blog. Email your dreams to livebig[at]sigler[dot]com.

On Monday, our social media-savvy state took yet another step forward, hosting Iowa's first-ever 140 Characters Conference. The 140 Characters Conference is a nationwide series of talks dedicated to "exploring the state of now," with a day of diverse speakers who address some aspect of real-time technology for a max of 10 minutes. (15, if you're lucky enough to be a "featured" presenter.)
Nathan Wright from Lava Row and Deb Brown were responsible for bringing this unique event to Des Moines. Speakers came from all over the country to speak on a single topic, a singular passion. The event is known for its fast-paced, random format, and the 140 Characters Conference Des Moines was no exception. Topics ran the gamut — travel, motherhood, museums, education, politics, finding jobs, finding internships, ethics, journalism and more.
In true 140conf fashion, here's a rapid-fire recap of some of the day's takeaways:
One of the recurring themes throughout the day was finding a new way to describe social media. It's become a dirty word in some circles, and "social media experts" have popped up like dandelions. (Check your Twitter followers if you don't believe us.) A form of "social networking," "social capital" and just plain "media" were all mentioned as replacements.
Chatter about the 140 Conference Characters Des Moines also helped propel the hashtag #140confDM as the #3 trending topic in the U.S. for a brief period. Ultimately, the conference helped continue to prove that Central Iowa is serving as a hotbed for real-time tech — appropriately enough — in the here and now.
DES MOINES, Iowa, May 11, 2011 – Innova Ideas & Services recently was honored by two philanthropic organizations for charitable contributions by the agency and one of its executives.
Variety – The Children’s Charity recognized Susan Hatten, Innova’s Senior Business Development Executive, with a Presidential Citation at the 2011 Variety World Conference on April 28 in Chicago. Variety International also presented Innova the 2011 Corporate Award at a dinner reception April 29.
Separately, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa presented Innova a Big Dipper Award at the charity’s Des Moines gala May 6 at the Prairie Meadows Conference Center in Altoona.
“We have been very fortunate to be honored recently,” said Beth Cross, president of Sigler Companies, Innova’s parent company. “Charitable contributions are Innova’s way of living our corporate values of positivity and worthwhile work. It’s humbling to receive these awards on top of the rich rewards we gain from supporting programs that help children overcome challenges and reach their life potential.”

It's no secret — Innova loves Olde Main!
One of the (many) advantages of having an office on Main Street Ames is having neighbors like Olde Main Brewing Co. nearby. They've been there for us for everything from business lunches to toasting new accounts.
In honor of really nothing in particular, we held a 24-hour Olde Main marathon to show our support for the local brewery. Everyone took a turn knocking back a bottle or pint of Clone, Sodbuster, Dinkey, Off Kilt'er and Longface from 5 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Yep, life is hard in the advertising industry!)
Check out our best Mad Men impersonation below, with some pics we took while playing with our neighbors' toys. Cheers!
NOTE: No billable hours were harmed in the making of this slideshow. All participants were required to walk a 10pixel-thin line and touch their nose with a pica pole before resuming work. :)

When we launched our new "Live Big" calendars last month, we asked for the biggest, baddest goals and wildest, unicorniest dreams on your personal wish list. We’d then re-interpret your contribution with an original creative piece — be it illustration, photo or macaroni art. Well, here’s one from our friend Liz, who said she dreams of “a self-cleaning house; kind of like the self-cleaning oven, but better smelling.”
This is a little story snippet and design mashup inspired by you, Liz!

Spring Cleaning
‘Hands-free housework!’ The salesman had said those words no fewer than 4 times in the half-hour sales pitch. It worked. It worked only too well.
Still, the boxes sat unopened for a month, like all the other “as seen on TV” temptations she had bought on a whim. But eventually the need for spring cleaning won the tug of war against the urge to put it off…
Well, let’s see what these things can do.
She plugged in the Whirlo vacuum and it went right to work, sucking up the dust bunnies and cat hair like a champ, all on its own. She didn’t have to lift a finger. But it also began swallowing up curtains and duvets without a hitch. He did say ‘unprecedented suction power.’
Thwwwp! There went an area rug. Hm, there must be a setting…
Then the Whirlo mops and brooms jumped into action. They formed a kickline, whipping up raging whirlpools and dust devils alternately. HEPA filters burst into flames and the dustpan and handbrush neatly cleaned up the ashes.
The house was in chaos. Sparkling, spot-free chaos. Wait, where’s the cat?
She knew she should have picked up the extended warranty.
Somewhere, you could hear the faint sounds of a cartoon mouse laughing.

Music unites. Music inspires. Music eats up your bandwidth.
Now there's a new way to enjoy all the benefits online music has to offer: Turntable.fm.
Turntable's premise is simple: you have up to 5 DJs at a time, taking turns playing tracks from a vast library (everything from "Werewolves of London" to "Howlin' for You" and Harry Nilsson to Wolf Parade), as well as your own uploads. You hit 'Awesome' or 'Lame' during songs to add or subtract DJ points. Use those DJ points to get new avatars and earn serious cred in the room.
What makes Turntable different from other popular streaming music sites like Pandora and Grooveshark is the real-time social aspect. You're in a room with friends and strangers, all playing off each other to see who can get the most heads bobbing. Plus, with the chat feature people can call out requests, come up with new theme challenges or talk about the next "big thing."
And, just as blogs serve as the voice of your company, Turntable can serve as your soundtrack. Invite folks to join your room, show 'em what kind of vibe you have at your workplace (or space). Twitter HQ, Foursquare and Zynga all have rooms on the site, and Silicon Prairie highlighted a few local examples in a recent story on Iowa startups hosting their own Turntable rooms.
Though it's still in private beta (you need to know someone on Facebook who's on it to get in), it's easy to see potential in Turntable.fm — assuming things stay on the up and up with the RIAA. In fact, they just recently added "Buy" links to songs, so there's affiliate money to be had.
It's fun. It's a breath of fresh air. And it's incredibly addictive. In fact, I composed half this blog while spinning in the 3 Guys from Iowa room. Stop by and jam with us some time.
AMES, Iowa, July 6, 2011 – For the fifth consecutive year, Sigler Companies has been recognized by Greenstar Recycling for recycling excellence.
The 2010 recycling results include 898 total tons, 878 of which were paper recycling; the equivalent of 3,476 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This year’s figures bring the five-year total to nearly 4,200 tons of recycled material by the companies.
“As this award shows, each of our co-workers is informed and passionate about recycling as much material as we can,” said Beth Cross, president of Sigler Companies. “We see the positive impact our efforts make and will continue to be good environmental stewards.” According to Greenstar, Sigler Companies’ 2010 recycling efforts are equivalent to:
Sigler Companies has established itself as a green printer through certification with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Other green printing practices include concentric printing, a technology that uses 25 percent to 35 percent less ink than the traditional printing process, and adoption of inks free of volatile organic compounds (known as no-VOC or VOC-free inks). Co-workers throughout Sigler Companies’ multiple locations have enacted steps to help minimize energy consumption.

Great Scott! It appears today's advertisers are taking a cue from Doc Brown and going back in time to promote their products. Well, kind of.
In the world of marketing, we are always coming up with new and interesting ways to bring attention to our customers’ products. Whether it’s paying somebody to tattoo a logo on their body or providing stay-at-home moms with a free advertising-wrapped car, I’m not often surprised with the latest and greatest (strangest?) means of advertising. This includes product placement in the entertainment industry. In 2011, you’d be hard-pressed to find a scene at the movie theater that doesn’t have some sort of advertising going on.
Now, thanks to product-placement company SeamBI, TV shows from years past are able to sell promo spots by digitally altering syndicated episodes with new products and brands. It may have been shot in 2006, but we can advertise like it’s 2011. EW.com goes into detail about SeamBI and how they are running ads for new movies like Bad Teacher and Zookeeper in old episodes of How I Met Your Mother.
I distinctly remember when I became aware of product placement in the entertainment industry. Before that day, I was a naïve 12-year-old farm kid whose only access to movies was when I spent the night at my cousin’s house watching Wayne's World (they actually lived in a town with a video rental store). After Wayne and Garth presented it to me in a manner that any fool could comprehend, I began seeing it every time I watched a movie. After awhile, it started to be one of the main things I would look for when going to the theater. I would even pick products out of the TV shows I watched, much to the annoyance of my parents and siblings.
The question I immediately asked myself after reading the EW article was, “How long until movies start cashing in with this new technology?” Imagine the possibilities–Rick Blaine sitting at his bar in Casablanca, demanding Sam to “Play it!” as he polishes off a nice tall glass of Jim Beam Red Stag; Dorothy trying to get back to Kansas as she follows the LIVESTRONG yellow brick road donning her ruby red Skechers; or even Charles Foster Kane as he calls out for “Rosebud,” a treasured Burton Vapor snowboard from his childhood.
What do you think about shows altering original works with these product placements? Would it be different if they started altering old movies? What’s the next leap in product placement?

The re-designed site features a new homepage with clear paths for visitors to follow, based on their needs. There is a rotating news feature on the homepage to help keep content fresh. The site also features an employee-only area with company newsletters, surveys and referral forms, as well as a link to order company apparel - an especially useful tool from a human resources perspective, since the companies’ network of nurses is so decentralized and located throughout the Midwest.
Back-end admin features allow UNSI to add/edit job openings, news items and employee-focused content. Innova programmers also developed an online application form which allows users to search, review and apply for a job without ever leaving the site. Innova was responsible for the copywriting, design, development and programming for both sites.
Comparing the same 6-month periods from January to June year-over-year, the new version of the site saw a 20% increase in traffic, nearly tripled in total number of pageviews and more than doubled in pages per visit. The site also doubled in visits from organic search.
Innova also worked with UNSI to create & produce direct mail, radio and newspaper advertising. After a variable data mailing in January 2011, the Ultimate Nursing site saw a spike in traffic over the previous month:
Write what you know. For anyone who’s ever taken a creative writing class, this saying is sure to have popped up a time or two or ten. And it makes sense, right? But anyone who’s ever worked a stint as a copywriter knows that in this career, if you only write what you know, you won’t be writing much.
That’s not because we copywriters are an unlearned bunch. We know our fair share of stuff. For the most part. But what we know and love in our daily lives doesn’t always get to shine through in what we’re challenged to write about in our professional lives.
Take, for instance, a copywriter obsessed with, say, 1990s TV shows. He might have every episode of Family Matters memorized, but unless he can find a clever way to work “Did I do that?” into his hydroelectric battery charger sell sheet, he probably won’t get a chance to write about his obsession at work. That’s the downside.
But the upside is we get the opportunity to learn about a whole slew of topics, products and viewpoints we may not otherwise have been introduced to had we chosen a different career path. Because in this business, you can’t be scared to get down and dirty with what you don’t know. You have to love to learn. It’s like this quote I just made up, “Get busy learning, or get busy losing.”
So…what have you learned at your job(s) over the years that you never thought you’d know? Do you think it’s made you a better, smarter, interesting-er person?
~ Shae C.
*Not to be confused with learning to love.
Our friends at Signify Pink have been up to something! They're launching a new line of scrapbooking supplies and DIY patterns called "Glimpses" at the Craft & Hobby Association Tradeshow in Illinois this week.
Getting enough handmade samples ready for the event required about 2 weeks of non-stop, hand-crafted creativity from our team (as well as a few recruits in the form of friends and family members). But early reports are that these fun, festive new looks are already turning a lot of heads at the show.
Check out pics of samples and the booth below:
Summer is all about R&R: reruns and reality TV, that is. Flip on the tube and you’re sure to catch last season’s comedies or see the general population kicking and shoving for their 15 minutes of fame. Unfortunately, since I’ve seen most of last season’s best comedies, I’ve been pulled to the kicking and shoving side of the TV-sphere…namely Big Brother.
For not one, not two, but three nights a week, I get to tune in and watch reality contestants run amok in a brightly-colored, maze-like house (okay, studio set), all while backstabbing and lying in the name of winning $500,000 at the show’s finale.

And I’m not the only one who’s tuning in – Big Brother has been on the air since 2000. But why has it been so popular, while other reality shows have come and gone? If you’ve seen it (you can admit it – you’re among friends), you know Big Brother isn’t exactly the highest quality of TV shows. It doesn’t have any change of scenery. It’s pretty much the same thing every episode, with little twists thrown in here and there, like America voting on what contestants can eat (seaweed and sardines were winners earlier this season).
Their success stems mostly on the “right time, right place” phenomenon. Way back in 2000, TV executives went on a hunch that reality TV was going to go gangbusters. And they got in on the ground floor with Big Brother. Sure, there was the Real World and others before them, but CBS's Big Brother (and Survivor) helped move along the genre to what we know today.
Like any successful brand, Big Brother seized an opportunity, and they did it better than many of their competitors. Add in the fact that their season lasts only a precious 3 months out of the year, and you’ve got a loyal fan base who can’t wait for summer to roll around so they can get their Big Brother fix. That’s a brand I wouldn’t mind investing in.
What other brands have seized an opportunity similar to Big Brother? Do you think the show would succeed if it lasted, say, six months instead of three? And last but not least, if you had to be on a reality TV show or else you would only be allowed to eat seaweed and sardines ever again, what show would you pick?

Ever been stumped when trying to come up with the perfect word or phrase to finish off that pesky tagline? Have a product that needs a name and you’re fresh out of ideas with a deadline looming large? Are these the dumbest questions ever and is this possibly the most cliché way to start a blog?
That’s what I thought.
If you’re like me, when you first receive assignments like these, you go straight to the notepad and start scribbling out ideas until your brain is empty. I’ll even sketch some awesome stick figures with some giving me the thumbs up, just a little affirmation that I’m doing one helluva job. But, spider webs of words and excessive back patting don’t always send me down the path to creative euphoria.
Sometimes I need a little help from my friends.
The following are some of my favorite places to break out of a stumped situation, and maybe they’ll help you find the inspiration and direction you need as well:
Have any sites or ideas that help you get over the hump? Want to share them with a fellow writer? How about a favorite Jason Patric quote?
It’s October. That means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You’ve likely heard the numbers, but they're worth repeating. 1 in 8 women get invasive breast cancer at some point in life. 1.3 million people diagnosed annually. Someone dies of breast cancer every 69 seconds.
Like millions across the country, we've been deeply affected by breast cancer – this includes our actual families as well as our extended family of clients and partners. While fighting back and trying to find a cure is a year-round concern, here are a few ways we’re getting involved this month…
This month, we’re lacing up our running shoes for a good – no, great cause. Folks from Innova, Sigler and Signify have formed a team for this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure - Des Moines. We’re proud to participate once again in Race for the Cure, among our local sisters and fellow supporters.
It’s inspiring being side by side, mile after mile, with so many fighters and survivors. When it comes to raising money for the fight against breast cancer, we talk the talk and literally walk the walk (or run the Run, as the case may be).
The Des Moines Race for the Cure takes place Oct. 22, and you can register here.
Our friends (and Ames co-habitants) at Sigler on Main are hosting a breast cancer awareness event on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event is part rally (folks are encouraged to bring their Race for the Cure teams), part sale (everything in the store is 25% off) and all about supporting women.
Sigler on Main carries Fight Like a Girl apparel and accessories, which not only help spread awareness but help raise valuable funds to support women in need. A portion of the proceeds from all Fight Like a Girl products sold at Sigler on Main go to Free Clinics of Iowa.
Our Signify Pink team has partnered with Ladies' Home Journal, the premier women’s wellness publication, to launch Fight Like a Lady.
Fight Like a Lady products are available exclusively throughout October, and come with a built-in donation to a breast cancer-related organization. Best of all – people can choose the cause that’s closest to their heart. At checkout, you can select where your 30% goes: Komen for the Cure, American Cancer Society or National Breast Cancer Foundation.
***
At Sigler Companies, we're always looking for ways to do worthwhile work. Breast cancer awareness is one area where we are very passionate. How are you fighting back this month?
AMES, Iowa – Sigler Companies is pleased to announce its Signify Pink program has partnered with Ladies’ Home Journal to support breast cancer research and awareness through the sales of “Fight Like a Lady” shirts and hats. Fight Like a Lady is an exclusive Ladies’ Home Journal line of products developed as an extension of the Fight Like a Girl design, currently sold under the Signify Pink label.
Available items include a short-sleeve T-shirt, long-sleeve T-shirt and embroidered cap. All items are black and decorated with the Fight Like a Lady design. They can be purchased online through www.LHJ.com, www.wearethefight.com and www.signifypink.com.
The products are being introduced in the October issue of Ladies’ Home Journal and advertised as a fundraising partnership between Signify Pink and Ladies’ Home Journal. Each sale will generate a 30 percent donation toward one of three breast cancer awareness organizations, selected by the customer at point of purchase: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, American Cancer Society and National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Sigler Companies designed the items, developed the online store, and will produce and distribute all the Fight Like a Lady merchandise from its Ames, Iowa, headquarters. In addition, Sigler Companies will distribute all money raised to each organization on behalf of Ladies’ Home Journal.
“We are proud to partner with Ladies’ Home Journal to support breast cancer research and awareness,” said Sigler Companies president and CEO Beth Cross. “Fight Like a Lady is an excellent fundraising program and aligns well with Signify Pink’s goal of supporting women’s causes and breast cancer-related charities.”

Designers and iPads are a dangerous mix. We're already easily distracted, but with an iPad by my side, one minute I'm working on a proposal — the next, I'm trying to keep the Yeti zombie from eating my brain. It really makes for a rollercoaster of a day.
The first few days I had my iPad I spent a lot of time scouring the App Store, downloading the standards (Evernote, Twitter, Tumblr, Penultimate, etc.) and digging up a few obscurities I thought might have potential. Most of those initial apps didn't have a lot of long-term appeal, but here are some that I still rely on for productivity tools and creative outlets:

FlickrStackr ($1.99)
I love FlickrStackr because it allows me to quickly find photo references when concepting. You can also save photo searches as "Stacks" — from your own photos or anybody else's — without having to publish it to flickr.

iThoughtsHD ($9.99)
iThoughtsHD is a mind-mapping app which I have found to be a great asset early on in the design process. It's loaded with features that allow you to organize all your brainstorming down into digital format.

WURM ($1.99)
WURM creates trippy patterns with its random pattern generation. With a wave of your hand, you can unleash a dazzling array of colors and shapes, or you can let the shuffle mode do the work for you. For me, it becomes a source for meditation while waiting for files to render.

Sketchbook Pro ($4.99)
Despite the fact I carry an actual sketchbook with me, I like Sketchbook Pro because it allows me to quickly crank out ideas without having pens and markers at the ready. Plus, I can't upload my paper sketches easily to Dropbox — yet.

Contre Jour ($0.99)
Contre Jour is a beautiful game. You move, swing, and leap through an interactive landscape, solving puzzles. The soundtrack and limited color palette make for a wonderful experience. (Let's face it, I can't always be designing.)
The wonderful thing about the iPad is that while I love these apps, my new favorite is just around the corner. You never know when the next "big thing" will come out, or what exactly it will do, but the iPad has helped add a new dimension to graphic design.
What are some of your favorite apps for design — or just in general?
~Patrick S., Graphic Designer II
As a copywriter, I used to be a traditionalist, scribbling everything down on pad and paper first, then filling out body copy clacking away on a keyboard later. Ever since I switched to the iPhone, however, I've seen the light...the soft, glowing light of a retina display.
With the iPhone comes an endless array of delicious apps to download — yes, some of which even help me do my job. Granted, I'll still jot down the occasional inspiration for a headline or tagline in the iOS default Notes program, but here are a few of the tools that I like to use when I need a little more oomph.

Tumblr, Twitter, WordPress, etc. (Free)
Micro-blogging on your favorite platform is a great way to keep the words flowing — work-related or not. I like to have all the options at my disposal, since I never know when I may have to ghost write for my clients and they all have a different preference. (If you pressed me though, I'd probably say Tumblr is my personal favorite. Plus, depending on who you follow, the Tumblr dashboard is great to cycle through when you need a creative kickstart.)

Evernote (Free)
Evernote has about everything you could need in a note-taking app. Format text, add photos and tag notes for archiving to tackle almost any writing project you might have. Plus, whether you're conducting interviews or attending seminars, you can record the speaker while you also take notes freehand. (Even records in the background while power's off or other apps are running. Just remember to hit 'Save' before you start bouncing around with other notes. I lost a couple of great talks from SXSW last year. Bummer.)

Inspiro ($2.99)
Brainstorming by yourself? Check out Inspiro. It's an idea generator that allows you to string together unexpected combinations of adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs. Come across one you like, that has potential? You can save those key phrases for use in later projects. The great thing about Inspiro is that it brings you truly dynamic words and captivating imagery, such as "happy pecs," "imaginary airports," "buttery grouphugs on tiny tables" and the like. The next great tagline could be waiting!

Wikipanion (Free)
The greatest research tool this side of Google. When I need to know about R-values or orthotics, all I have to do is enter it into the search field and Wikipanion pulls up Wikipedia pages in an iPhone-friendly format. Boom - instant expertise. (Well, instant working knowledge at the very least.)

Words With Friends (Free / $2.99)
Okay, so it's not a productivity tool by any means. But when it comes to language, Words With Friends does keep your mind sharp and your vocabulary verbose. You may even be able to sneak something you see played into that newsletter article you're writing. (Although I don't envision ever fitting words like "XI" or "QAT" into copy any time soon.)
Honorable mentions include: WriteChain or WriMoDemon (haven't started using these yet, but they sound like great reminders for keeping you on task and meeting writing milestones); iCloud or Dropbox (essential for storing files & sharing across devices) and This American Life (simply storytelling at its finest). What are your favorite apps for writing — and inspiration about writing — while you're on the go?
Also, if design is more your thing, be sure check out Patrick's list of for iPad apps for graphic designers.
~Corey J., Ass't Director of Copywriting/Digital Media Writer
An official Red Ryder carbine-action two-hundred-shot range model air rifle. What more could a kid ask for? Especially if it’s the 1940s and your idea of a swell time is listening to Little Orphan Annie – interspersed with Ovaltine commercials – on the grand ol’ radio.
Of course, if A Christmas Story would have been set in the decade in which I grew up (the illustrious 1980s), Ralphie wouldn’t have been pining over a Red Ryder brand BB gun. He would have spent his days dreaming of a bright orange Nintendo Entertainment System-branded Zapper light gun so he could take out animated ducks and practice virtual target shooting. Sure, he wouldn’t have felt the wind in his hair, but he wouldn’t have run the risk of shooting his eye out, either. It’s a toss-up, really.
And chances are, instead of drinking Ovaltine, Ralphie would have been sipping the sweet chocolate, strawberry and vanilla nectars of Nestle Quik (Nesquik, to you youngsters out there). After all, listening to boring Ovaltine commercials on the radio is nothing compared to watching flashy Nickelodeon on a console TV and seeing a cartoon rabbit touting the thick, chocolatey taste of Nestle Quik. Who needs Ovaltine when a bunny that obviously knows his chocolate-flavored drinks is telling you Nestle Quik should be your thirst quencher of choice?
Nearly 30 years later, A Christmas Story is still going strong – even if its meager box office earnings didn't suggest future success. But thanks to a strong, cult-like following and TNT's “24 Hours of A Christmas Story,” the movie has become a behemoth of a holiday franchise.
Would it have been as successful set in another decade? Would Ralphie finding an NES Zapper hidden in the corner been as memorable? I’m guessing not as much. Plus, we wouldn’t have heard the magical line, “Those icicles have been known to kill people!” — because, as aforementioned, with the Zapper, Ralphie wouldn’t have been in danger of shooting his eye out.
This holiday season, enjoy your time with family and friends gathered near – and be sure to watch out for those icicles. They’ve been known to kill people, you know.

Sigler Companies was recently featured in Mailing Systems Technology, one of the leading publications for mail center operations.
The article highlighted Sigler Printing's recent transition to a new UV inkjet system. The new solution addresses the variable data and barcoding needs of our mailing department, with improved efficiencies of more than 30% in both output and ink consumption.
An excerpt from the article is below.
"Jeff Oleson of Sigler Printing had a problem. Their two inkjet printers were at their end of life. The printers couldn’t handle the USPS requirement for the 65 bar Intelligent Mail Barcode. Sigler produces a lot of mailings, some of them 2 million pieces and above. They needed a solution.
So Olsen, being a savvy Business Solutions Analyst for the company, did what he does best: he researched his options. And he ended up with significant savings and a more streamlined operation as a result."

As an Innova family member (by actual DNA, even), I’ve had a unique view of the company over the years. It's been fun watching the company grow, and every time I come back it seems something new and exciting is happening. I once again find myself here at Innova, spending the next month helping out in the copywriting department. It's been interesting to get an inside view of a company I’d primarily only known from a few tales around the dinner table. This blog gives me a chance to share some of the things I've seen "behind the curtain"...
Innova Ideas & Services started with a singular vision, a do-whatever-it-takes mentality and a group of motivated employees. Quite literally, though, it started with the destruction of a building in downtown Ames, Iowa.
A little over 11 years ago I walked into an old hardware store armed with a sledgehammer, axe and sawzall. My job: tear the building apart, demolish its interior. Over the course of a couple weeks that is exactly what I did. Alongside 2 high school buddies, we ripped the building to shreds…and we enjoyed it.
In 1999, Innova was a fledgling company looking to expand into new digs that would complement their vision and aspirations. Of course, it still had to have a serious creative vibe. It was then that Sigler Printing and Publishing, Innova’s parent company at the time, purchased the 304 Main Street location — formerly Carr Hardware — to house its startup marketing and ad agency.
The goal of the remodel was to create a modern office feel, while retaining the building’s historic look and integrity. Tour Innova today and little touches of the past still shine through: the tin ceiling is intact, original wood floors were brought back to life, and the upstairs offices are in their initial configuration, with refurbished doors and trim.
Shortly after Innova settled into their new home, I moved away. Since then, I've been back only a handful of times but each time Innova seems to have taken on a new life. While some familiar faces are still there, new ones are added all the time. While the building gets rearranged and renovated, its tenant goes through its own evolution.
As I pushed through Innova’s front door the other day I was taken aback by its newest incarnation, Sigler on Main. Where a receptionist once sat, a retail store now lives. Sigler on Main is Sigler Companies' apparel outlet for Signify Apparel & Merchandise, a full-fledged Main Street shop selling their unique brand of Iowa collegiate clothing and fundraising merchandise.
Much like how I helped transform Innova all those years ago, the company continues to update their vision to redefine and rebuild in an ever-changing global economy. Sledgehammers and sawzalls are no longer necessary. Innova’s tools for the future are a mix of Iowa ingenuity and savvy business decisions, combined with progressive thinking and non-stop concepting. Clients have noticed, too — whether located right here in the company's backyard in Ames and Des Moines, in New York City or across the globe.
Stay tuned for the next big idea as Innova continues to push the envelope for their community and clients.
Knowledge is power! That was obvious in 2011, as it quickly became the year of the infographic. In that spirit, we've prepared a merry little infographic full of fun stats and facts from around Sigler Companies.
Get the data you need to know, such as how much egg nog we can drink, what our favorite holiday movies are and how many of us will be re-gifting this season. The most important statistic you should know? 100% of us wish you a happy holiday season!
Enjoy!

We returned to this year's SXSW Interactive Conference hungry to learn about new technologies and eager to meet with our favorite startups. While they aren't the official SXSW Interactive awards (and some aren't even "interactive"), we did come back with a few highlights from our time in Texas:
Most Visible:
"JESS3. It was hard to miss these guys. If it wasn't the posters everywhere, it was a flyer or sponsorship or a speaker at a session." ~@Mr_TT
"The 'Catch a Chevy' promo. Free rides in a new car? We'll take it!" ~@SamSchill
Biggest Announcements:
• "Pinterest's upcoming changes to the profile page, media formats and API show they're not content with their rapid success." ~@SamSchill
• "The Turntable.fm founder announcing they've officially licensed with the major record labels." ~@heycoreyj
• "Jay-Z's concert. I tried to win tickets but wasn't eligible. Our friends at foursquare got tickets to the show and I was extremely jealous." ~@Mr_TT
Best New(ish) Startup:
• "Wander. They're very stealthy right now, but watch out." ~@SamSchill
• "Cerealize. Cereal delivered?! Are you kidding me??" ~@tylerkoontz
• "Draw Something." ~@Mr_TT
• "I still like Highlight and its potential." ~@heycoreyj
Biggest Celebrity Sighting:
• "With all apologies to Iowa's latest startup superhero Ben Silbermann (one of the founders of Pinterest), the biggest – quite literally – celebrity we saw this year was NBA champ Robert Horry. He was our PeeWee Herman sighting of this year." @SamSchill
• "Rainn Wilson." ~@Mr_TT
Best Quotes:
• "Information density is ridonkulously high. It's not a problem with too much information, but a problem with the filter." - Sunni Brown
• "The subconscious experience is influential in decision making." - Colin Shaw
Second Best Quote (By a Whisker):
"Actually hearing the founder of Movember say, 'That's a crackin' mustache,' in a thick Australian accent." ~@heycoreyj
Best Session Name:
• "OMG, Your RFP is Killing Me!" ~@Mr_TT
• "Adding Value as a Non-Designer, Non-Technical No-Talent Assclown" ~@heycoreyj
Biggest Inspiration from an Off-Topic Session:
"When Joss Whedon – creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer & director of the upcoming Avengers – was asked if he had to choose between working in TV or movies, he answered TV because it afforded him a chance to develop characters further, throughout the life of the series. This made me think about how I write for clients. Brands may be the overall, overarching story, but products essentially serve as the characters. Having a lifetime relationship with a client can allow you to write products like characters and evolve their individual stories in different scenarios." @heycoreyj
Biggest Buzzwords:
• "Iteration, iterative, iterate...." ~@heycoreyj
• "'Be scrappy' or democratization." ~@Mr_TT
• "Lean." ~@SamSchill
Best Swag:
"You mean besides the shirts we make at Sigler Companies? Ahh, we kid, we kid." @tylerkoontz
Oldest Old School Moment:
"The Boxee Kegger." ~@SamSchill
Longest Line: "The badge pick-up line on Friday afternoon. The line snaked twice around the corner of the massive Austin Convention Center. We waited for 2 hours to pick up our passes. (Close second goes to the Ray Kurzweil keynote address.)" ~@heycoreyj
Fuzziest Mascot:
"Easily belongs to Glomper. Glomper represented a a social sharing service which 'helps everybody find and create interesting events, share the moments with friends and remember the good times.'" ~@Mr_TT
Biggest Battery Drain:
• "Highlight. This "potential connection alert" service comes to life when you're nearby someone with similar friends/interests. We talked to a couple folks who liked the novelty of it, but had disabled - and even deleted - it due to diminishing battery life. Fun at the airport, but not at in downtown Austin. But, as this TechCrunch article pointed out, Highlight still has plenty of possibility in cases of 'user sparsity and NOT density.'" ~@samschill
• "Does waiting for cabs count?" ~@tylerkoontz
Best Meal:
"Fish & chips at Fado's. And I don't even like fish." @heycoreyj
Biggest Meal:
"All-you-can-eat BBQ dinner at Stubb's." @tylerkoontz
The Thing We Missed Most About Iowa:
"The weather. Our first 3 days in Austin were rainy, while back home Iowa was enjoying unseasonably beautiful weather." ~@SamSchill
AMES, Iowa, April 2, 2012 – For the sixth consecutive year, Sigler Companies has been recognized by Greenstar Recycling for the company’s “outstanding achievement in recycling.”
The 2011 recycling results include 780 total tons, 718 tons of which were fiber; the equivalent of 2,726 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This year’s figures bring the company’s total to nearly 7,000 tons of recycled material over the past six years.
“We’re so pleased that, as part of our everyday workflow process, we are able to easily recycle materials and help protect our environment,” said Beth Cross, president of Sigler Companies. “This award belongs to the entire staff of Sigler Companies who remains passionate about the environment and committed to continuing our recycling efforts over the years.”
According to Greenstar, Sigler Companies’ 2011 recycling efforts are equivalent to:

Other green printing practices include concentric printing, a technology that uses 25 to 35 percent less ink than the traditional printing process, and adoption of inks free of volatile organic compounds (known as no-VOC or VOC-free inks). Co-workers throughout Sigler Companies’ multiple locations also take steps to help minimize energy consumption.

The new name. Charity work. Metta World Peace, formerly known . This is a man who's put time into helping mental illness. Then one elbow came crashing down.
Rebrand, meet relapse.
Not only that, he's hurting the LA Lakers' image as a whole. This is a team whose reputation also suffered a black eye after Andrew Bynum in last year's NBA Playoffs.
It would be like BP doing all their work to clean up the gulf and making reparations to the lives they affected, and 2 years later, they run a tanker ashore.
Des Moines, IOWA, May 3, 2012 – Nicole Torstenson has been promoted to director of Innova Ideas & Services’ strategic marketing and public relations department.
Torstenson’s experience includes more than 11 years in marketing, public relations, sales, budgeting and campaign management. As a senior strategist at Innova since 2007, Torstenson helps clients from several industries develop and implement comprehensive integrated approaches to reach their marketing and PR goals. She also offers specialized expertise in developing and implementing social media strategy, taking full advantage of this newest form of media for several clients. Torstenson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations with a minor in marketing from the University of Northern Iowa.
“Nicole has earned the respect of her clients and colleagues by continually demonstrating our core values of dedication, integrity, professionalism and positive behavior,” said Dawn Budd, VP of Innova. “She has shown leadership and initiative in continually bringing new ideas to the table. Now, through her guidance and dedication, Nicole will help our strategic marketing and public relations department continue to evolve and grow.”
“Everyone wins when we are able to promote from within our own walls,” added Beth Cross, president of Sigler Companies, Innova’s parent company. “We are extremely pleased and excited to have Nicole transition smoothly to this new position. We wish her great success in taking Innova’s strategic marketing and public relations department to a new level of expertise.”

Sure, The Avengers broke box office records. But there was something else people have been buzzing about the last couple weeks — the new Sigler Companies calendar!
Just received my updated copy of the @SiglerCompanies annual calendar. My office decor is complete.
— Ali (@alimd11) May 2, 2012
I'm really digging my new social media calendar from @innovaideas. Thanks!!
— Laurie DePhillips (@Ldephill) May 3, 2012
Each year, we put together a desk calendar for our partners. Sure, it's got the months and days on it, but it's more like a year-long piece of art for your office. And, it's a great opportunity for us to color outside the lines of a creative brief for a little while.
This year's theme is "Let's Get Digital." Taking a cue from Sigler Companies' work with tech startups, we made this calendar all about the apps and social media sites that connect us, entertain us, distract us and drain our batteries.
The calendars feature pages handcrafted by Innova's creative team: illustrations from our graphic designers and words from our copywriters. Oh, and hey, they're also printed in-house at our sister company, Sigler Printing.
Check out some of the sample pages from this year's calendar below.

It was the elbow heard around the world. The Lakers' Metta World Peace was celebrating an impressive dunk against the Oklahoma City Thunder, muscles flexed and arms swinging. In all the excitement, he "inadvertently" struck Thunder player James Harden right behind the ear. World Peace claimed it was a case of wrong place, wrong time. It was an accident to some. Intentional to others. Regardless, it left its victim with a concussion and undid years' worth of rebranding from the Ron Artest/Metta World Peace camp.
He had changed his name. The label "Ron Artest" had some serious red in the ledger (See: Malice at the Palace).
He was publicly supporting a great cause. Metta sold his 2010 NBA Championship ring and donated the $285,000 to mental health charities last year.
He even seemed to clean up his act on the court. The technicals, flagrants and confrontations were on the decline in recent seasons.
Then the world came crashing down.
Metta World Peace single-handedly (elbowedly?) destroyed his new identity with one crack to the back of James Harden's head. Then, he was ready to take on an entire team. Worse still, he failed to acknowledge what he did was wrong, to referees, to anyone who would listen. Sure, he'd tweet an apology, he'd show concern for the victim eventually. Too late.
Rebrand, meet relapse.
Metta World Peace's most recent brushup not only cost him 7 games' worth of paychecks, it hurt the greater parent brand of the LA Lakers franchise. Though no strangers to on-court scuffles, the Lakers pride themselves in being one of America's teams - one the NBA can parade around to fans young and old alike. "This is how basketball is supposed to be played." Now people watch for the implosion.
Sure, it's sports. But big businesses deal with this every day. Repackaging themselves, cleaning up their act, begging for forgiveness and praying for forgetfulness.
They make younger-looking logos. They tease name changes to appear as the healthy choice (such as KFC's move to Kentucky Grilled Chicken). They buy credits to offset their carbon footprints. They invest in high-powered PR firms to spin crisis communications.
But a rebrand is only as good as your willingness to stick to the brand guidelines. Metta World Peace seriously broke rules 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 15.
It's as if BP did all the work cleaning up the Gulf Coast and making financial reparations, and then, 2 years later, they run a tanker straight into the shoreline.
Metta's suspension ended just in time to help his team win a critical Game 7 against the Denver Nuggets. Now the Lakers are set to play — who else? — the Thunder in Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs.
To make matters worse, Metta has shown little remorse or regret post-suspension. He's already started stirring the pot with Harden and other Thunder players in interviews.
Sounds like another name change is in order.
It’s May. It's Memorial Day Weekend. Hamburgers are on our minds and soon to be on our grills. It’s also National Burger Month (coincidence?). In celebration of this glorious 31-day festival of ground chuck, we offer a Top 5 rundown of our favorite burger spots of all time — from the sizzling to the surreal — as well as a few side dishes of a slightly different variety.
As expected in any list of top burger commercials. Wendy’s made a pretty significant leap forward in 1984 when it introduced the world to retired manicurist Clara Peller. The famous tagline she spouted for Wendy’s became to the mid-'80s what Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video is now; culturally relevant and wildly popular, invasive of mainstream America. The campaign boosted Wendy’s revenue by 14 percent in 1985 and even made its way into the 1984 political vocabulary.
In this stirring turn as an actor, legendary Texas Rangers ace (and Robin Ventura sparring partner) Nolan Ryan tragically describes his woes when going on the road, where his beloved Whataburger is nowhere to be found. How does he stave off depression? Whataburger, of course. And Ryan doesn’t stop at mental health nirvana, he also gives up the secret to his famous fastball: jalapenos on his burger.
The granddaddy of them all. The Big Mac is known worldwide as McDonald’s flagship hamburger. This particular bit of consumer participation is a lighthearted, tongue-twisting description of the signature burger, accompanied by a folksy interlude and a very slick unboxing. Later attempts at Big Mac ad magic couldn’t seem to capture the same charm and fun vibe as the 1975 iteration.
The God of Hamburgers has graced mortal man with his finest creation: The Steakhouse Six Dollar Burger. Revel in the glory of Hamblor as he constructs a burger fit for the titans. While the commercial adeptly showcases the ingredients of the burger, we’re left with a brainbusting question: which mythology does Hamblor occupy? Roman, Norse, Greek, Eternia? One can only speculate about the domain in which Hamblor rests his laurels.
Ah, the '80s. This McDLT spot from 1985 has all the hallmarks of the era: catchy dancing/singing number on the streets, Miami Vice-style clothes, painfully excessive use of Styrofoam packaging, mono-color windsuits. Also, we’ve got a pre-Seinfeld Jason Alexander (complete with a full head of hair) serving as the pied piper of burgertown. Jason Alexander may have starred in Duckman and Dinosaurs, but the world will forever remember the short, stocky, bald man’s turn as a McDLT pitchman.
The Chick-fil-A Cows
Technically a campaign for chicken sandwiches, the likability of the crusading cattle is undeniable. Misspellings have never been so cute as when scrawled by desperate, semi-anthropomorphic cows. Chicken beware; the cows are organized.
Burger King’s “Wake Up With the King”
Another one for the “this ain’t hamburger advertising” category. The personified King’s return to glory in 2004, after a long hiatus from campaign appearances, made us cringe and laugh with his plastic, grinning head and willingness to go the extra creepy mile to distribute egg and meat and cheese...and meat...and cheese.
Taco Bell, circa 1979
This one has it all: beef, veggies, tostadas, blonde teenagers in letterman’s jackets. And don’t forget the upbeat jingle’s message to “Put a smile on your face at Tac-a-Tac-a-Taco Bell” which, according to the ad, used to be the “Fresh Taste Place.” Since then, they’ve ditched the fresh approach to encourage the consumption of a gutbusting “Fourthmeal” and the unfortunately enticing, guiltily delicious Doritos Locos taco.

Welcome to a sneak peek inside Innova Ideas & Services. From time to time, we like to share stories and photos from where the magic happens — what inspires us, what motivates us, what keeps us creative. In this edition, we've got some highlights from our graphic designer Dayne, who was kind enough to share what makes her tick...
I have recently begun playing a fun mobile game called Logos Quiz. The idea behind the game is to guess what logomark represents a brand. The logos are taken out of context, letters are removed, elements are altered, all making it much more difficult than you think. It's surprisingly challenging, even from a designer's standpoint.
Most of my daily life consists of working with brands and creating identities, including logos like in the quiz. This, in turn, makes me think of how much of a consumer I really am. (Gasp!) Just looking around on my desk, I have collected some pretty cool consumer goods. I guess you could say these are a few of my favorite things.

Top 5 coolest things at my desk:
It's all these little things that help me create throughout the day. Yes, I could develop logos and lay out package design and assemble proofs without these things...but why would I want to? :)
June 26 is National Chocolate Pudding Day. If you're like me, you've had this date marked on your calendar all year long and have cleared your schedule for a morning of over-indulgence followed by an afternoon of regret.
If you're like Bill Cosby, you've cleared this day on your schedule to swim laps in your Scrooge McDuck-like swimming pool filled with all the cash you made due to this wonderful product.
It's a testament to great marketing when a company is able to take over the thoughts and minds of consumers for a certain product category. Kleenex®, Q-tips®, Coke® and Band-Aid® have done a great job with this. I don't know about you, but when I think of chocolate pudding, I think of Jell-O®. And when I think of Jell-O, I think of Cosby.
Having a great spokesperson is a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal. Jell-O hit the jackpot when they signed the popular comedian to market their product back in 1974. Bill was the voice of the Jell-O brand for 30 years, but will always be associated with the product – whether he's cashing a check or not.
It wasn't all about the pudding either; he helped introduce Jell-O Pops, Sugar-Free Jell-O, Jell-O Jigglers and even Sparkling Jell-O – referred to as the "Champagne of Jell-O."
In honor of National Chocolate Pudding Day, I've compiled some commercial moments from our favorite purveyor of pudding for your enjoyment.
Write this down to tell your moms, kids. Bill says chocolate pudding is "wholesome" and "good for you."
Notice how the kids won't eat the crappy vanilla ones, so Bill steps up.
I don't know who Frank Doyle is, but he's about to find out how many sugar-crazed 3rd graders he can fight at one time.
I don't know what is smoother, the pudding pops or those orange bibs.
I wonder how angry Santa was when he got to Bill's house this Christmas.
Was there ever a better match between pitchman and product? Or was Cosby the ultimate spokesperson? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!
Last week, we discussed Bill Cosby's glorious career as a pitchman for Jell-O. Here's a look at the performance of another one of advertising's great spokesmen, in honor of National Safety Month...
"Hi! Louie the Lightning Bug here!" That's what countless kids in the glorious 1980s got to hear every Saturday morning smack dab between the Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks.
I should know – I was one of those kids.
Before Louie the Lightning Bug, I was apt to climb trees and fly kites by power lines, never knowing the perils of such activities. But when LLB came on the scene, he sang and danced his way into my safety-loving heart, and 'til this day, I could sing you his safety song if you asked nicely. (You don't want to hear me sing, though, so you probably shouldn't ask.)
When I was a kid, I liked Louie's public service announcements for their stylish cartoons and addictive songs. Now that I'm older, I can appreciate the marketing behind it all.
His jingle wasn't just catchy for catchiness' sake – it was designed to stick in kids' heads, really make them think about the dangers of electricity. It worked for me. Not once have I had a run-in with electricity, and I like to think it's all because of Louie.
The chorus — "You gotta play it safe around the power lines" — is just as effective as a good tagline. Emotional, informational, and infectious all at once — pretty much what makes up a powerful brand encounter. In this case, it just happens to be a PSA.
Every once in a while I'll catch Louie on the telly, teaching the next generation to play it smart around electricity. Do they appreciate him as much as my generation? Hard to tell. But one thing I do know is this – I'll never fly my kite where power lines go.
We took a break from designing annual reports, websites and the like to design something truly important: paper airplanes. Creativity takes all forms, right?
Aside from a close run-in with our friendly neighborhood mailman (it went something like this), building paper planes was a fun way to beat the heat this week. Plus, who knows when some of these paper-folding techniques may come in handy for a unique print design?
There were many challengers, but only one winner. Congratulations to Heather, whose plane went the farthest!

This weekend kicks off the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London. And so begins when we all strive to find our inner Hercules and Olympic spirit. Some cheer on favorite athletes by shouting at their TVs and now mobile devices. Others dress up in their best Team USA gear in hopes of getting airtime.
Sponsors from all over the world also come out of the woodwork to get a piece of the pie. Such a high-profile event is sure to help you gain loyal customers, right? But Official Olympic Sponsorship comes at a high price — in the hundreds of millions of dollars — and the IOC has strict marketing guidelines to boot.
So how should companies utilize the spirit of the Olympics to promote their business without being an official sponsor?
Focus on the emotional tie-in and patriotism. The impact of social media on the games will be the biggest it has ever been. During the last Olympics in 2008, social media was still in its infancy stage. Facebook (2004), YouTube (2005) and Twitter (2006) all launched mid-2000s, and Instagram didn’t launch until 2010. People’s reactions are going to be even more tied in with tweets and posts, so those companies not involved in social media should consider getting involved now.
Marketing Profs has some good advice for advertisers not willing to shell out the $100 million+ that it takes to use the official Olympics rings in materials:
More details and examples for each of these tips can be found at the full article on the Marketing Profs website (requires a free registration).

AMES, Iowa, Aug. 16, 2012 – Innova Ideas & Services will relocate its marketing services staff to Des Moines and end its 12-year presence on Main Street in Ames effective Sept. 15, Sigler Companies executives announced today.
In a strategic realignment of Innova and its parent Sigler Companies, agency employees will consolidate in the Innova office at 516 Third St. in downtown Des Moines, said Sigler Companies president Beth Cross. Others will move from Innova Ames and Innova Des Moines to concentrate the Sigler presence at 3100 S. Riverside Drive in Ames.
The reorganization was guided by an employee-led process, Cross said. Functional teams met to offer ideas on the future of Innova and how it operates. Uniting employees in a single location was seen as a way to increase collaboration, and to become more efficient and effective in work internally and with clients.
The restructuring will redeploy the “right talent in the right place,” said Cross, and will not reduce staff or necessitate job cuts at either Sigler or Innova.
Total employee count will be unchanged between the two Sigler Companies business units: Innova, which provides full-scale creative and marketing solutions, and Sigler, the print, apparel and merchandise production arm. Jobs based at the Sigler headquarters facility near the Ames airport will increase from 138 to 194 and bring the total of Des Moines-based Innova employees to 49.
The move is part of a companywide restructuring and reorganization to accommodate new client growth and increased demands from existing clients, said Cross. Sigler Companies has emerged from the broad economic downturn of 2008, she said, and an investment this year in technology and repositioning of talent will prime both business units for accelerated growth.
A strengthened Sigler presence in the state-of-the-art production facility it has occupied since 2007 will offer more opportunities to clients and ensure that Sigler Companies continues to be an active corporate citizen, Cross said.
“Sigler Companies has more than 50 years of history in Ames,” she said. “We have outgrown location after location, and this latest move is just the first, outward indication of an exciting new plan that points the way to future growth in our home community, outward.”
