Biodiesel is the name of a clean-burning alternative fuel produced from renewable resources.
- REG specializes in plant management; biodiesel production; sales and marketing; plant construction management; risk management and raw material procurement. In 2006, REG marketed 78 million gallons of biodiesel. Current REG network production capacity is 162 million gallons per year and expected to grow to more than 490 million gallons by 2010.
- REG marketed 27% of all biodiesel sold in the U.S. in 2006.
- Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend.
- Every gallon of SoyPOWER biodiesel is tested to meet or exceed industry quality standards.
- Biodiesel is registered as a fuel and fuel additive with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
- Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the Clean Air Act.
Renewable Energy Group, Inc. is the biodiesel industry leader of B100 sales and is the only full-service biodiesel company offering plant management, risk management, raw material procurement, plant construction, biodiesel production and biodiesel sales and marketing services. Clinton, McCain Shine Spotlight on Biodiesel
Renewable Energy Group, Inc., (REG), a national leader in biodiesel production and distribution, welcomed Presidential hopefuls Sen. John McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton to events in Ames, Iowa, and Newton, Iowa, on Tues., Nov. 6, 2007.
Sen. McCain attended the ribbon-cutting of the new REG headquarters in Ames. Later that morning, Sen. Clinton toured the REG network biodiesel production facility in Newton, and shared her thoughts on the nation's energy needs.
Sen. McCain joined REG executives and area economic development officials to officially open the new, 60,000 square foot REG headquarters. Included in the plans for the facility is a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art laboratory. The $2 million laboratory, slated for construction this fall, will allow REG and its network facilities to research and help develop cutting edge technology for the growing biodiesel industry.
Sen. Clinton toured Central Iowa Energy, LLC., a state-of-the art, 30 million gallon per year biodiesel production facility which is managed by REG. Newton was home to the Maytag production facility which recently closed. Today, two-thirds of the REG network biodiesel plant’s employees are former Maytag employees.
The presidential hopeful toured the biodiesel facility. Immediately following the tour, Sen. Clinton shared her thoughts regarding the nation’s energy needs.
Newton's biodiesel facility employs 28 people and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week to produce clean burning biodiesel from renewable resources such as soybean oil and animal fats. B20 (20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel) significantly reduces hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions. Biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine without modification and has a net energy balance of 3.2 BTU of energy returned for every one BTU used to produce it.
"Biodiesel spurs economic development in local communities, reduces emissions, creates a source of renewable energy and reduces our dependence on foreign oil," explains REG CEO and Chairman Jeff Stroburg. "We are proud to have Senators McCain and Clinton join us for this historic day, and to help educate America about the advantages of our nation’s rapidly expanding biodiesel industry."

"REG is blazing the trail for a reduction in our dependence on foreign oil and a reduction of greenhouse gasses," McCain said. "This is what America is all about."
"I don't think there's a doubt in anybody's mind that we've been too dependent on foreign oil," he said. "This is another sign of how America is tackling a challenge we face that's very difficult."
Senator John McCain
"Our nation's dependence on foreign oil places our economy at risk, our security in jeopardy, and our planet in peril," Clinton said. "But I believe we can transform the way we use and produce energy – and create at least 5 million jobs in new green industries."
"We can transform the way we make and use energy," Clinton said, speaking at a biodiesel plan in Newton.
