Scalable Commercialization Technology for Algae-based Biodiesel
Renewable Energy Group opens door to suppliers of algae oil from many strains
- Leading U.S. biodiesel production and marketing company Renewable Energy Group (REG), Ames, Iowa, has implemented technology to refine the oil from a variety of algae strains and produce algae biodiesel exceeding ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 quality specifications.
- Universal compatibility for refining and production across algae species subgroups is an express route to getting volumes of raw material needed for commercial-scale biodiesel production at levels on par with other vegetable-oil and high free-fatty acid feedstocks now in use.
- REG is seeking algae-oil production partners to supply feedstocksĀ for commercial-scale production of algae biodiesel.
- REG already has pretreated and refined crude algae oil it has used to produce high-quality algae biodiesel at the pilot-scale level.
- Involved in biodiesel commercialization since 1996, REG uses a multiple-feedstock approach to biodiesel production, and can augment current pretreatment and production of algae biodiesel in increasing volumes using its continuous-flow, commercial-scale process technology.
"REG's successful demonstration of technologies presents the flexibility and opportunity for it to partner with almost any algae-oil supplier for biodiesel."
Glen Meier
Research and Development Manager
Renewable Energy Group, Ames, Iowa
"Commercial demonstration of algae biodiesel at this level is a major step forward for the industry, because by defining the processing parameters for larger volumes of algae oil, we can process the algae oil at any of REG's commercial-scale biodiesel production facilities like any other feedstock out there today."
